We created the Novartis Biome as a bridge to help our partners become an extension of our own teams, working with us as easily and productively as possible to jointly innovate and co-develop digital solutions at scale.

We’re taking on some of the biggest healthcare challenges – something we can’t and don’t want to do on our own. We’re committed to partnering with the best in the ecosystem to combine our deep scientific experience with the expertise of the tech world to develop – and crucially – scale digital solutions that improve and extend patients’ lives.

To do this, we realize we need to make it easier for companies big and small to partner with us. The healthcare industry is notoriously complicated – highly regulated and traditionally behind the curve in terms of digital disruption.

Collaborate with us

We believe in uniting the best of science and technology to create better healthcare solutions and seamless experiences for patients and caregivers, at scale.

Not to be confused with an accelerator or incubator, we allow teams to co-develop digital solutions alongside specific therapeutic offerings, research activities, and business processes within Novartis. At the same time, we provide external innovators with the resources and opportunities they need to validate their solutions through access to regulatory, medical or legal expertise, as well as data sandboxes linked to over two million patient years of clinical trial data, and in some cases, investment and financing.

Access to world-class expertise and technical skills

Whether you are biotechnology, medical technology, e-health, academia, through the Novartis Biome you will have

  • A speedy onboarding process in weeks, not months, so that teams are signed up and ready to build, validate and scale solutions that deliver practical, effective healthcare on a global scale.
  • Access to the Enablement Guild: A dedicated one-stop business partnering team providing speedy and specialist support from a wide range of practice, including Legal/IP, Privacy, Regulatory, ERC, Procurement, Quality, Patient Safety, IT, ISRM and Governance.
  • Access to expertise from functions such as regulatory, medical, clinical trial design, market access and legal, as well as ability to pressure test and validate the scalability of a digital solution prior to full-scale implementation.
  • Access to data sandboxes with access to more than two million patient years of clinical trial data.
  • In some cases, investment and financing.

Innovation hubs

The Novartis Biome is a network of innovation hubs, able to use this global platform to democratize access to tech innovation and expertise, and keep in step with the ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

Novartis Biome Canada, based in Montreal, was established in 2020 as a specialized data and digital hub within Novartis. Acting as a connector and facilitator, the Biome fosters dynamic collaboration to develop innovative solutions that create a more efficient and connected healthcare system for Canadians. Through its Solutions Lab, the Biome promotes continuous ideation, learning, and innovation by encouraging cross-functional collaboration between Novartis teams and external ecosystem partners. Since 2020, Novartis Canada hosted 3 BIOME Summit, resulting on engaging events that brought together top healthcare ecosystem partners to inspire, connect, and collaborate on solutions to healthcare challenges. By bringing together the right expertise and capabilities, we aim to continue to challenge the status quo and push the needle on innovation.

Our mission is to build better healthcare solutions powered by data and digital technology in four keyways:

  • Connect – bringing the right capabilities to the table
  • Accelerate – driving progress at scale
  • Collaborate – building the future together
  • Access – leveraging industry know-how

As part of a global network of Biome Digital Innovation hubs, Novartis Biome Canada is embedded in its country's tech ecosystem, scouting for innovative ideas and scaling up the best digital healthcare solutions across borders.

Novartis Biome in South Korea is a network of innovation hubs designed to democratize access to tech innovation and expertise. The Biome connects internal partners, healthcare professionals, and tech entrepreneurs to find digital solutions that accelerate diagnosis, drive treatment accessibility, and improve patient outcomes. Novartis Korea has been actively involved in driving innovation and collaboration through the Biome series of Health X-Challenge Seoul. This annual event, in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Korea Institute of Science and Technology, and the Seoul Biohub, aims to discover and co-create innovations with startups with digital healthcare solutions. The Health X-Challenge has been instrumental in addressing healthcare challenges and fostering collaboration between Novartis and various stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem.

Through these initiatives, Novartis has built strong relationships with startups, healthcare systems, government bodies, and research institutions, creating a robust ecosystem for innovation. Novartis Korea’s commitment to partnering with the best in the ecosystem has led to the development and scaling of digital solutions that improve and extend patients' lives.

Here are some examples of innovative projects co-created through the Health X-Challenge:

  • Humanscape: With a focus on rare diseases, Humanscape co-created a solution to increase the disease awareness and track potential symptoms of SMA in South Korea, through their prenatal care app, Momitalk (used in over 1 100 OBGY clinics across 4 countries - South Korea, US, Indonesia and Vietnam).
  • 3 Billion: Revolutionizing rare disease genetic testing with AI-powered genome interpretation, 3 billion's project improved genetic testing awareness and access for all known 150+ retinal genetic diseases.
  • Lemon Healthcare: Lemon Healthcare created an integrated service that enables mobile processing from appointment to consultation, payment, and insurance claims. To improve the patient and HCP communication, a digital pre-consultation was created for heart failure patients.
  • Dr. Diary: Dr. Diary developed a chronic disease management platform that helps patients track their symptoms, medication, and lifestyle changes. Disease awareness of hyperlipidemia was conducted.
  • EverEx: AI rehabilitation exercises were co-created as a specialized module for Ankylosing Spondylitis, allowing prescription of personalized exercises and monitoring by HCPs for AS patients to promote exercise and improve the quality of life.
