Novartis is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of its products over their entire life cycle. As scientific knowledge and stakeholder expectations evolve in this field, we regularly benchmark our activities and actively support researchers, regulators and other groups in developing more efficient environmental practices.
Supply chain environmental footprint
We aim to fully understand the materials supply chain and environmental impacts along the chain, based on assessments of materials, products and vendors. This will help us to determine opportunities on how to actively influence the environmental impacts of our supply chain. We also plan to develop options for meaningful targets to reduce these impacts.
In 2015, we conducted an assessment study on the carbon footprint and risks related to water consumption of our direct materials supply chain. These studies have demonstrated that the impacts along the supply chain (Scope 3) are considerably larger than those inside the organization.
Novartis is committed to continue assessing its material supply chain more comprehensively and in more detail to better understand the respective environmental impacts and identify areas for improvement.
