As a global leader in healthcare, we take our responsibility to protect the environment seriously – and we have already accomplished a lot. While Novartis Group sales have more than doubled in 15 years, our consumption of energy and water has increased at a much slower pace and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been reduced.
However, we know there is much more work to do, which is why we established a new environmental agenda in 2015. The 2030 company vision on environmental
sustainability is underpinned by ambitious targets spanning four areas: energy and climate, water and micropollutants, materials and waste, and environmental sustainability management. By 2020, we aim to reduce both our Scope 1 + 2 GHG emissions and non-recyclable operational waste by 30% compared to 2010. We are also committed to protecting water quality and decreasing water consumption, and reducing the carbon footprint of our global supply chain.
Employee safety is also an integral part of an employer’s responsibility. Novartis Group companies are committed to providing our associates with safe workplaces. Reducing accidents is a top priority for Novartis. We have systems in place to prevent accidents and ensure our operations are safe. Ongoing training programs for employees and annual targets aim to bring us closer to our goal of an accident-free environment for all Group company associates.
At the same time, we aim to systematically identify and assess risks to our business. We manage risks proactively by implementing preventive and contingency measures to reduce the likelihood of an event occurring and the severity of its consequences.
