Becoming an environmentally sustainable business

Our ambition is to be a catalyst for positive change and a leader in environmental sustainability.

Our continued investment in our planet supports our purpose to reimagine medicine to improve and extend people’s lives. It is also a way to build trust with society, if our actions are guided by a commitment to transparency and creating enduring change.

We will work to understand how a changing climate will impact people's health. We will deliver environmentally sustainable medicines to people that need them.

  • Planet

We will minimize the impact of our actions on the planet and invest in environmental solutions that also protect biodiversity. Through our value chain, we will benefit ecosystems and planetary health in general.

Our Strategy and Targets

We aim to drive sustainability through our own operations, as well as those of our suppliers, and we have set ambitious targets to minimize our impacts on climate, waste and water.

  • Climate

    Climate

Our climate targets meet the criteria of the Science Based Targets initiative. We aim to be fully carbon neutral by 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2050 at the latest.

  • Water

    Water

Water neutral in all areas of our operations by 2030.

  • Waste

    Waste

    Plastic neutral by 2030.

Science Based Targets

Novartis is proud to participate in the Science Based Targets initiative, which champions science-based target setting as a powerful way of boosting companies’ competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy. The initiative is a collaboration between the not-for-profit CDP, United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and is one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.

Novartis has committed to set science-based emissions reduction targets across our entire value chain that are consistent with keeping global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Within the scope of this commitment, we have joined Business Ambition for 1.5°C and have also become part of Race to Zero, the UN-backed campaign led by the High-Level Champions for Climate Action.
