As the Head of NPP&LEX, you will lead a high-performing team of eight seasoned New Product Planning professionals, driving bold strategies and flawless execution. Together, you will partner closely with Development, Medical, Access & Pricing, BU, International Commercial, and Global Strategy to influence critical local and global development decisions that reimagine medicine to improve and extend people’s lives.
Beyond strategy, this team champions agility and and excellence, ensuring best-in-class launches of innovative medicines into the Japan market.
About the Role
Major accountabilities:
- New Product & Pipeline Strategy
- Lead a team of eight professionals to shape pipeline and new product strategies across four core therapeutic areas: CRM, Oncology, Immunology, and Neuroscience.
- Serve as the Japan commercial representative and point of contact in the global and international pipeline discussions.
- Lead commercial strategy for new products and foster decision making at Japan Pipeline Management Board.
- Represent New Product function on multiple cross-functional governance bodies that drives decisions from early development through regulatory filing
- Support the evaluation of global external Corporate & Business Development (C&BD) opportunities (i.e. global deal assessments) by providing country-level perspective.
- Contribute to corporate long-term TA portfolio strategy development (5 years +) by providing country focused TA input on portfolio topics.
- Launch Excellence
- Lead Strategic Launch Governance: Manage local launch review meetings with the Country President and leadership team to ensure alignment on priorities and execution.
- Drive Agile Pre-Launch Planning: Design and oversee an effective, flexible pre-launch process that supports multiple product launches over the next three years.
- Monitor and Optimize Launch Performance: Track overall launch status, ensuring the right level of investment and prioritization across brands to maximize business impact.
- Champion Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with international Therapeutic Area teams to support Launch Readiness Reviews with the International President and global stakeholders.
- People/Organizational Leadership
- Inspire and Lead a High-Performing Team: Provide vision and direction to a team of eight professionals, fostering accountability, innovation, and excellence.
- Develop Talent and Drive Growth: Champion career development and succession planning, ensuring team members have clear pathways for growth and advancement.

- Shape Organizational Impact: Position the team as a strategic partner to the business, enabling seamless integration of new product planning and launch excellence across functions.
Job Dimensions:
- Number of associates: 8
- Financial responsibility: As a priority market, NPPLEX Head is responsible to maximize value potential from a commercial perspective of Novartis’ pipeline (i.e. responsible for 4-8% of global pipeline value).
- Impact on the organization: An important contributing leader to ensure Novartiscan realize its goal to become a top 3 company in Japan by 2027 and to ensuresustainable outperformance of market growth beyond that.
Requirements:
Education (minimum/desirable): BSc in biomedical or life sciences required, Ph.D. or
MS in biomedical sciences or MD preferred; MBA is a plus.
Languages: Japanese & English (spoken and written fluency)
Experience/Professional requirement:
- Minimum 8 years of industry experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in at least one of the following roles: New Product Planning, Marketing, Strategy, Marketing Excellence, Market Access, Business Transformation, Medical Affairs, Drug Development, Business Development, Consulting or other related roles in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Excellent leadership, networking and communication/negotiation skills in both English and Japanese to work effectively in a highly matrixed and multicultural environment.
- Goal-oriented self-starter with creativity in their thinking and entrepreneurial spirit.
- Able to work effectively in highly ambiguous and complex areas.
