Biomedical Research Hub in San Diego, California 

Our investment in San Diego includes a newly planned $1.1 billion research hub, a state-of-the-art research facility that will add to our world-class scientific infrastructure and drug discovery capabilities on the west coast, to enhance and strengthen the efforts of Novartis scientists working to reimagine the future of medicine. The new complex, expected to open between 2028 and 2029, will serve as the epicenter of the Novartis West Coast Biomedical Research presence, complementing existing hubs in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Basel, Switzerland.

Designed to support current and future demand and ongoing innovation in RLTs, the Carlsbad site is built for further expansion, enabling the potential production of therapies.

Our facility in Morris Plains, New Jersey has been producing groundbreaking cell therapies for patients since 2015. The site specializes in advanced manufacturing and supply chain processes that ensure the timely delivery and efficacy of these innovative, life-changing treatments at scale. Our site in Morris Plains employs approximately 700 people. 

Gene therapy production in Durham, North Carolina

Our site in Durham, North Carolina produces innovative, life-changing gene therapies at scale. The 170,000 square-foot facility makes, tests and releases these groundbreaking therapies that are designed to deliver long-term, life-changing outcomes for patients. The site also makes gene therapy products for ongoing and future clinical trials, helping advance the next generation of treatments. We currently employ approximately 350 people in Durham.

Radioligand therapy production in Millburn, New Jersey

In 2023, our Millburn, New Jersey site became the first Novartis manufacturing location in the US to produce radioligand therapies (RLT), a personalized and targeted treatment for multiple cancers. Since then, we have expanded on-site production capabilities to ensure as many patients as possible can receive RLT when and where they need it. Millburn is home to approximately 200 Novartis employees.

The site is home to cutting-edge research facilities and about 2,000 scientists, clinicians, and business professionals dedicated to scientific innovation and drug discovery. The company’s decision to invest heavily in the area has been driven by the region’s highly skilled talent marketplace, world-leading hospitals, and potential for collaboration with both the local biotech and academic communities.
