Summary

Location: Switzerland Full time, onsite, #LI-onsite Novartis' Biomedical Research division is our Innovation engine. Within the Neuroscience labs in Biomedical Research we have bold objectives to transform the lives of millions of people living with neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases and conditions and unmet medical needs. The Pre-clinical Neuroscience group in Basel, Switzerland, is looking for an experienced Research Scientist with substantial background in Neuroscience and Cell Biology. By joining our team, the successful candidate will be actively involved in developing and optimizing neuronal cellular models for target discovery/validation efforts and compound profiling in the field of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration.

About the Role

Your responsibilities:

  • You will play a critical role in establishing and implementing neuronal cellular assays and functional readouts both for assessing novel targets and characterizing compounds modulating neuroinflammatory/neurodegenerative pathways
  • You will develop functional assays using rodent primary cells, cell lines, or hiPSC-derived cells to support existing and new projects
  • You will independently plan, execute, and analyze experiments and present results in team meetings
  • You will establish and adapt new protocols and experimental designs, independently search for information in scientific and technical literature and are aware of new developments in the area of expertise
  • You are a team player and will engage in multiple collaborations with different units and show scientific curiosity, initiative, flexibility and excellent communication and organizational skills
  • General laboratory maintenance duties and responsibilities will be part of the daily activities

Minimum requirements:

  • University degree (BSc, MSc,) in Biology, Cellular Biology, Neuroscience or related discipline or completed apprenticeship as laboratory technician in Life Science discipline, both with 1-3 years of additional relevant work experience. Please note that we do not require a PhD level candidate for this position.
  • Prior expertise in neuroscience related drug discovery and/or cell modeling is required
  • Strong practical knowledge in cell culture techniques such as isolating and handling primary rodent neuronal cells, maintaining and differentiating hiPSC cells into neuronal cells, or working with complex 2D or 3D co-culture neuronal cell models
  • Knowledge in biochemical and imaging methods (Western, ELISA, ICC/IHC and microscopy/image analysis is required
  • Experience in some of these standard laboratory techniques is a plus: RNA isolation, qPCR analysis, FACS, cell transfection/virus transduction and stable cell line generation, functional cellular assays (e.g. cell survival, proliferation, migration, Calcium imaging)
  • Animal handling license (LTK1) would be a plus
  • Fluency in English (oral/written)
