Alcon is dedicated to helping people worldwide to enhance, protect and restore their sight – regardless of where they live. In many developing countries, Alcon’s strategy has been to build a mid-priced product offering that provides several benefits to the patient and surgeon and is economically viable in the region.
For example, Alcon’s Laureate phacoemulsification cataract removal system is tailored for emerging markets. The unit is more affordable than similar units, helping hospitals and surgeons provide this technology to patients. Laureate is available in Brazil, India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Argentina and Philippines.
Alcon also focuses on training new eye care professionals and continuously developing their skills. In 2011 Alcon sponsored the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Alcon also helped bring eye care to remote rural areas of China by providing operating room equipment for a Lifeline Express Hospital Eye Train.
