About the role : Internal Job Title: Research Scientist II Role Location: Cambridge, MA onsite About the role: We seek candidates who have experience in one or more of the following areas of in vitro drug discovery: a) identifying and validating new targets with various molecular biology approaches, b) establishing and executing biochemical and cell-based assays for optimization of novel therapeutic modalities, or c) innovating or establishing complex 3D in vitro model systems recapitulating disease traits. Key to success will be the ability to design and plan appropriately controlled experiments in collaboration with others. The ideal candidate for this position will possess skills in cell and molecular biology, with experience in conceiving and developing in vitro models for target discovery and validation approaches. They will have a track record of independent work and a history of success in cross-functional teams. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other groups in DAx and across departments at NIBR. This individual will report findings effectively by oral and written presentation. Applicants should possess excellent record keeping and organizational skills. Excellent communication and teamwork are critical to success in this position. Key Responsibilities: • Leverage molecular biology techniques to validate new targets • Conceive, plan, optimize, and execute in vitro cell-based and/or biochemical assays for mechanism of action and target validation studies • Leverage culture of primary cells and cell lines or organoids together with a variety of experimental endpoints (e.g. flow cytometry, RT-qPCR) to support project progression • Clearly present results and data to teams within DAx Renal Research group and across NIBR • Work in compliance with the Novartis Code of Conduct and in accordance with Novartis guidelines on health and safety and data recording

Minimum Requirements:

• BS or MS (or equivalent) in Life Sciences
• Laboratory experience with 3+ years of demonstrated ability in an industrial drug discovery setting
• Proven experience in the culture of human primary cells a/o organoids, including passaging, freezing, and aseptic technique.
• Experience in a range of laboratory techniques, possibly including immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, ELISA, qPCR, Western blotting, and/or biochemical assays.
• Track record of independent work and proven creativity.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams and serving as a point-of-contact for the team
• Proficiency in computer use and laboratory software programs.
• Proven excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills

Desirable Skills:

• Ability to independently design and interpret experiments and plan next steps with support from matrixed collaborators
• Experience in development of assays for target validation and mechanism-of-action studies

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $84,000 to $126,000/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
