Bertrand Bodson serves as a strategic advisor for digital transformation to the CEO of Novartis. He was Chief Digital Officer and Member of the Novartis Executive Committee until January 31, 2021.
In an industry where it typically takes more than 10 years and billions of dollars to bring a drug to market, Bertrand Bodson’s mission is to help the company use data science and digital technologies to bring medicines to patients faster, increase efficiency and create more personalized engagement with customers.
The powerful pairing of science and technology is pushing our industry in an exciting direction and accelerating the pace of transformation. I’m passionate about the impact small, empowered teams can have, especially when we work with partners across the tech ecosystem to transform the way we conduct R&D, operate as a business, and engage with customers. It’s inspiring to see how a company with the size and muscle of Novartis can innovate at scale, with the agility and entrepreneurial spirit of a startup.
Bertrand’s background is as a business leader and tech entrepreneur, having co-founded his own social networking and content-sharing startups. He is passionate about taking global businesses into the digital age, and previously led the transformation of multi-billion dollar online businesses such as Amazon and EMI Music, as well as helping turn Argos into a leading digital retailer. He joined Novartis in 2018, recognizing the enormous potential for digital technology to improve human health.
As the architect of the Novartis digital transformation, Bertrand had led a series of programs to embed the use of data and digital and apply technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to the discovery, manufacture and commercialization of medicines. In collaboration with Microsoft, he championed the launch of an AI Innovation Lab that will revolutionize drug discovery and empower data scientists across the organization. Another collaboration with Amazon produced SpotOn, an insight center that optimizes manufacturing and supply chain processes.
Under Bertrand’s leadership, Novartis had made a series of bold moves to transform standards of healthcare. Together with the tech company Tencent, Novartis co-developed an AI-powered app called AI Nurse to support heart failure patients in China. He has also driven a major expansion of the Novartis Biome, a global network of innovation hubs that helps teams partner with the tech ecosystem to develop and scale digital solutions.
