Be Healthy is a company-wide health and well-being initiative, and is intended to benefit all Novartis Group company associates. The initiative provides associates a platform to become more involved in their personal health and live healthier lives. This initiative builds upon a tradition of providing well-being programs for associates at Novartis. The health of associates is a top priority for us and a natural extension of our company mission to discover new ways to improve and extend people's lives.
Novartis is focusing on prevention programs as part of Be Healthy. Statistics from the World Economic Forum (WEF) show that workplace health and well-being programs addressing lifestyle changes can help prevent up to 40% of noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and lung disorders.
Be Healthy is based on four pillars that aim to help associates achieve optimal health:
While activities are voluntary for associates, locations participating in Be Healthy introduce a range of health and well-being activities to encourage Group company associates to exercise regularly, choose healthy food offerings in canteens and participate in free screenings to learn important numbers such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In addition, support programs are available for those managing an illness or condition.
Our 2016 Be Healthy Celebration Week was held in September, and the theme was “healthy body, healthy mind.” It highlighted the link between physical health and mental and psychological well-being, as well as the influence emotions, life events, and coping skills can have on one’s health. The 2016 theme underlined that physical and mental resilience can support long-term health by increasing one’s ability to adapt to or recover from challenges and stress.
In 2016, Novartis again participated in the Global Corporate Challenge® (GCC) – an independent program through which teams of associates compete in a 100-day virtual race around the world. For the third year in a row, Novartis secured the No. 2 spot in the “World’s Most Active” global rankings out of 1 200 organizations participating worldwide. We were also named most active organization in the healthcare and medical sector. More than 18 000 associates from more than 65 different countries signed up for the GCC in 2016; 15 000 never missed any step entry, and 17 437 successfully completed the GCC to the finish line.
The Be Healthy initiative reaches 95% of our Group company associates in more than 50 countries. Along with numerous local awards in countries ranging from China to India, Novartis has been recognized internationally for the impact of its Be Healthy program. We were the first company to earn the Global CEO Cancer Gold Standard and received a Value-Based Health Award from the Institute for Health and Productivity.
