The Biology for Drug Discovery (B4DD) group is offering an exciting opportunity for an exceptional scientist with a strong background in Solute Carrier (SLC) biology. We are seeking a highly motivated PhD level Principal Scientist to join our team and unlock the therapeutic potential within the SLC gene family. Emphasis will be on SLC expertise across disease indications and experience in a pharmaceutical/industrial environment is an advantage.

The CBT department encompasses the full spectrum of advanced capabilities and cutting-edge technologies needed to succeed in a state-of-the-art and collaborative drug discovery environment.

Your responsibilities:
• Investigate the biology and therapeutic potential of SLCs in relevant pathophysiological pathways.
• Bring SLC knowledge to an established team of membrane protein structural biology experts to build an expertise group that enables differentiating paths to drug discovery.
• Show strong initiative in developing ideas and co-lead projects in an interdisciplinary core team with biology, chemistry and data science disciplines to refine constantly the strategic direction of projects.
• Perform research as a contributing bench scientist and develop reagents and assays to functionalize SLCs.
• Apply data mining of internal and external databases in close collaboration with data scientists.
• Explore potential collaborations with academia/biotech companies/consortia’s and contribute to the evaluation of in- and out-licensing opportunities for potential assets and technologies.
• Contribute to the growth and development of associates in the group, by living the Novartis values of performance, integrity, courage, innovation, quality and collaboration.

Minimum Requirements

What you'll bring to the role:
• Ph.D. degree in biology or biochemistry, with a minimum of 2-3 years of post-doctoral hands-on experience. Insights from a pharmaceutical/industrial environment are an advantage.
• Strong expertise in SLC biology and physiology.
• Experience in transport assays, sensor technologies, expression strategies, protein interactome technologies, confocal microscopy/imaging, gene editing technologies, variant libraries and/or primary cell systems.
• An exceptional record of accomplishments that demonstrate innovation, productivity and capability to work in a constantly evolving, collaborative and interdisciplinary research structure.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate in teams, work in an environment of matrix leadership, and interact effectively with partners, internally and externally.
