Tackling Africa’s health challenges
Africa faces immense challenges when it comes to providing adequate healthcare to its people. Noncommunicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes are on the rise and many people continue to suffer from preventable and treatable infectious diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. In addition, low levels of awareness, a lack of healthcare infrastructure and poor distribution channels provide large-scale barriers.
At the first-ever Novartis Africa Day in Basel, Switzerland, Novartis senior executives discussed these challenges, as well as some of the latest Novartis commercial and corporate responsibility efforts in the region. Chief Executive Officer Joseph Jimenez opened the event, capturing some of the exciting work that Novartis is doing as part of its long-term commitment to improve access to healthcare in Africa:
