# Implementing a New National Cardiovascular Policy by 2027

Novartis Ireland was proud to bring together policymakers, clinicians, patient advocates and industry leaders, for the launch of a white paper “Implementing a New National Cardiovascular Policy by 2027”.

Opening the event, Giulia Conti, Country President, Novartis Ireland, underlined both the urgency and the opportunity facing Ireland. Cardiovascular disease remains one of the country’s greatest health challenges, yet Ireland has been without a comprehensive national cardiovascular strategy since 2019. Giulia called for a coordinated strategy with clear ownership, measurable objectives and the resources to deliver—building on the strong foundation of the Nolan Report and the momentum created by the EU Safe Hearts Plan.

Giulia also stressed that progress depends on partnership. Government, clinicians, patients, advocates and industry each bring essential expertise—and lasting change will come from aligning those perspectives around clear priorities, implementation and accountability.

Moderated by journalist and white paper author Danielle Barron, the panel brought together Professor Yvonne Smyth, Consultant Cardiologist; Annie Costelloe, Head of Patient Community Engagement at Croí; Lotta Liljelund, Director of Portfolio Public Affairs, Region Europe, Novartis; and Eimear O’Leary, Director of Communications and Advocacy at IPHA. Their discussion explored prevention and earlier detection, treatment aligned with European guidelines, meaningful patient participation, digitally connected care, and the structures needed to move from recommendations to delivery. As Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the discussion was an important part of a wider European effort to turn cardiovascular policy ambition into practical action and better outcomes for patients.

Novartis Ireland is proud to have supported the roundtable process that informed the white paper and to help convene this important conversation. Ireland now needs to move from recommendations to implementation, with a funded, measurable and patient-centred national cardiovascular strategy capable of delivering lasting change.
