We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CBT) department in the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, MA as a Lab Operations Specialist. The Laboratory Operations Specialist will join a dynamic team that supports the operations of a large research department. This team is a key interface between lab scientists /associates and the supporting NIBR functions, including Scientific Operations, Real Estate & Facility Services, Health, Safety & Environment, Procurement, and the department’s leadership team.
The successful candidate must be organized, self-directed, can handle a variety of tasks in a matrix environment. This individual will be responsible for the management and implementation of local lab operations activities relating to safety, space, equipment, infrastructure, capital planning and purchasing.


Develop and maintain strong relationships with CBT scientists as well as with the NIBR Operations community to ensure alignment and execution of objectives. Identify opportunities, contribute to or lead initiatives to collaboratively improve service levels and business processes, and implement plans to improve local operations and communications.
Oversee local operations and maintain labs to ensure full compliance with Health Safety & Environment programs and regulations through regular lab safety tours, department liaison with Health Safety & Environment colleagues, support business continuity initiatives, establish relationships with key vendors to improve lab and chemical supply systems, liaise between scientists and vendor for consumable and chemical vendor managed inventory program to ensure proper service, and create and manage POs. Some financial analysis may be required.
Coordinate equipment services including calibration, maintenance, service contract renewal, and software and hardware upgrades. Maintain equipment database information, including updating database with new and decommissioned equipment, and when equipment moves.
This person will also be responsible for leading renovation projects and lab moves within existing space, including stakeholder management and identifying opportunities or solutions as needed.

• BS/MS in a scientific discipline, with 2 to 5 years’ experience managing lab operations or 3+ years working in a biology lab is required.
• Strong understanding of the processes and requirements needed in a research organization is needed.
• Ability to exercise independent discretion and judgment to solve problems is important, as well as prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment
• Ability to work in cross-functional teams, ability to influence without authority and actively manage stakeholders is essential.
• Proven ability to positively impact project goals and directions based on analysis of available information
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent written and oral communication skills are essential including ability to effectively communicate to an audience who may be unfamiliar with subject
• Excellent computer skills, proficiency in Excel is required, experience with Sharepoint is preferred and working knowledge of SAP is desired.
