The Position
Come build the future of Laboratory Automation at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. The Lab Informatics and Automation team is in the process of building a dynamic team capable of bringing cutting edge technologies and automation solutions to NIBR scientists. We need top-notch automation professionals to deliver the systems and tools we use to discover new medicines. It’s critical work – our systems are constantly improving our research infrastructure. That growth is going to continue – you’ll be responsible for fostering an environment that allows us to continually develop and innovate.

Responsibilities include:
• Managing, planning, developing, and executing laboratory automation projects from idea through implementation
• Ensuring all projects are delivered on time, on budget and with a high level of quality
• Identifying custom engineered solution opportunities and leading the development & management of such projects, including: project scope, feasibility, technical & functional specifications, problem solving, and project deliverables
• Participatation in process validation activities, change control, and performing feasibility studies prior to the formalization of a project
• Planning and tracking, scoping, budgeting, and maintaining quality and specified functionality in alignment with key business stakeholders
• Maintaining effective oral and written communication to Portfolio Management, project team leader, sponsor, and affected business unit(s) as appropriate
• Document and maintain project work plans, meetings, decisions, work change orders, project deliverables, progress reports, schedules, cost tracking and other pertinent reports
• In conjunction with NIBR’s Sourcing group, prepare RFQs/RFPs, and support vendor selection process in collaboration with end-users/scientists
• Work effectively with multi-disciplined groups and individuals to develop solutions that reflect operational efficiencies in terms of throughput, service delivery, costs, as well as health, safety and environmental considerations

Qualifications:
• An MS degree (or BS with 10+ years experience) in an engineering or science discipline with extensive experience in laboratory automation and drug discovery processes
• Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills required to interact effectively between scientific staff, customers, key stakeholders, and vendors
• Experience in custom engineered solution delivery, including: electro-mechanical design and general machining knowledge (milling, lathe, table saw, drill press, 3D printing, etc.)
• Experience in cell and tissue culture, high-throughput screening, assay development, and other laboratory workflows a plus
• Minimum 6-8 years of demonstrated experience in capital project management or product development, including contract and vendor management. (PMI training a plus)
• Experience working with major solution providers in the laboratory automation arena
• Strong computer skills, including: MS Office, Project, Visio, & CAD (preferably SolidWorks)
• Experience with laboratory automation control software (LabView, Thermo Momentum, Tecan EvoWare, etc.) or simulation modeling software (ExtendSIM) a plus
