60 million! That is how many people are affected globally by glaucoma. This can lead to progressive damage to retinal ganglion cells and the optic nerve and may lead to blindness.

At Novartis, we are developing new therapies to help control glaucoma disease progression by lowering eye pressure and by protecting retinal neurons to treat this silent thief of sight.

We are looking for an experienced scientist proficient in in vitro / ex-vivo laboratory skills to join our Ophthalmology department to support the discovery and development of innovative glaucoma treatments.

What you’ll be doing:

• Developing, optimizing, and applying in vitro / ex vivo assays to support the discovery, validation & characterization of novel glaucoma therapies, and stay current on literature and technological advances
• Handling / processing of ex-vivo tissues for pharmacodynamics / biomarker assessments
• Independently perform experiments, troubleshoot issues, analyze data, generate reports, and present data at internal forums
• Collaborate with cross-function al teams on target discovery and drug development projects
• Assist in general laboratory maintenance

Minimum Requirements

What you'll bring to the role:

• MS or BS in Biology or related field with 3-5+ years of full time academic or industry laboratory experience. The level of the position will be commensurate with experience.
• Hands-on experience in culturing primary cells / stem cells / iPSC-derived cells, immunocytochemistry, and fluorescent microscopy imaging
• Demonstrated proficiency in a broad range of techniques across pharmacology / molecular biology / protein biochemistry / cellular assays & analysis [such as cloning, PCR, viral vector transfection/transduction, CRISPR gene editing, receptor-ligand interactions, Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, cell-based assays, flow cytometry, cell sorting, ELISA]
• Strong attention to detail, demonstrated ability to execute experiments with rigor, and maintain clear and complete records of lab work
• Highly motivated self-starter and problem-solver, curious to expand existing skills & develop new ones
• Demonstrated capability to work independently, thrive in a fast-paced matrix research environment capacity, to adapt and respond timely to needs of research & personnel, and strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred:
• Training in Ophthalmology, Neuroscience, Immunology, Matrix or Cell biology or related fields
• Familiarity with ocular perfusion culture, tissue microdissection, explant culture, complex phenotypic assays, and cell culture systems
• Proficient in using biological databases and online resources / tools to analyze protein, DNA, and RNA sequences
• Experience with high throughput screening, immunohistochemistry, high content imaging
