Research Collaborations as a functional unit of Comparative Medicine (CM) actively engages in partnerships with NIBR drug discovery and development Disease Areas (DAs) Project Teams, providing high quality preclinical in-vivo research work for drug discovery and development. We deliver both high quality hands-on technical in-vivo expertise as well as in-vivo pharmacology project coordination/leadership capabilities, utilizing our innovative technologies, necropsy, imaging, flexibility with weekdays and weekend study coverage, and in-vivo training/certification platforms. We are the centralized core for best-in-class in-vivo studies partnering with NIBR DAs, immersed in the animal well-being 3Rs values, while building a greater understanding of the need and insight to answer the targeted biology questions. Our partnership helps to move NIBR discovery projects for patients’ unmet medical needs through quality in-vivo research data generation.

We are looking for a scientific professional leader at the Research Scientist II level to coordinate and run in-vivo research studies and projects to support the diverse and exciting NIBR research project portfolio. The candidate should be customer-oriented, an expert in experimental animal work, and possess a strong scientific background in order to plan design, coordinate and perform in vivo experiments with high technical and ethical standards. Closely collaborating with the animal welfare group and with NIBR disease area project teams, the candidate will provide high-level support with state-of-the-art animal experimentation, potentially leading a small team of in-vivo skilled research associates.

Major responsibilities include, but not limited to:

•Schedule, perform and coordinate state-of-the-art animal experimentation with the highest ethical and technical standards, setting up and validating animal models independently or through delegation to your team.
•Able to perform advanced, intermediate, and basic technical skills (compound administration, blood/tissue collection, clinical observation, necropsy, aseptic technique, implants, suturing, staples, surgical models, etc.) on applicable in-house species.
•Closely interact with scientists within NIBR providing project administration, optimal support, ability to build a robust professional network and generate high quality data.
•Participate in scientific discussions, performing critical review of experimental protocols and identify the best approach for in-vivo studies according to project needs.
•Continuously evaluate, implement, and train newest techniques and scientific knowledge to ensure state-of-the-art in-vivo work.
•Interest in data interpretation, statistics, and presentation, in order to propose next steps to our stakeholders.
•Be an excellent team player and show potential to lead teams, ensuring appropriate performance, training, and professional development of your associates. Identify and coach high and low performers using your leadership experience.
•Rotational or potential weekend duties, early morning, or late evening dosing may be required.
•Routinely responsible for ensuring team compliance with all institutional and regulatory protocols, policies, and guidelines.
•Responsible for pursuing continuous learning/professional development opportunities, enhancing/expanding skill set, and reviewing CM techniques.

Minimum Requirements

What you'll bring to the role:

•BS/MS/PhD in Life Sciences or equivalent experience
•Minimum of 3 - 5 years’ experience in a technical skills tract laboratory animal program required. The level of the position will be commensurate with experience.
•ALAT Certification desirable or pursued after start
•Strong commitment to animal welfare, research support, and high quality in-vivo focused science.
•Strong theoretical and practical expertise in animal experimentation with focus on small animals.
•Able to perform advanced, intermediate, and basic technical skills.
•Blood and tissue sampling experience (anatomy/necropsy knowledge) required.
•Expertise in different disease and mechanistic models
•High ethical approach, committed to high standards of animal welfare.
•Strong customer-orientation, used to communicate with a broad range of stakeholders, strong aptitudes as team player.
•High learning ability, ‘can-do’ solution-oriented and proactive approach.
•Good planning, prioritization, problem solving and organizational skills.
•Detail oriented, knowledgeable around the IACUC/AWC compliance, regulation, able to utilize paper and electronic study protocols, document experiments in laboratory notebook.
•Advanced computer skills using Excel, OneDrive, Word and Outlook, being able to collect and record research data having the ability and knowledge to review documentation as a quality control.
•Working knowledge of federal, state, local (Animal Welfare) laws, departmental SOP’s and Good Laboratory Practices.
•Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work from a standing position for prolonged time periods and perform repetitive motion tasks. May be required to work weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather.
