Within the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) situated in the San Francisco Bay Area is dedicated to finding new therapies to treat and prevent a range of noncommunicable and infectious conditions, with an emphasis on tropical diseases and viral pathogens. The Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases in Emeryville, CA, is seeking a talented bioinformatician to support preclinical research towards the discovery of new antivirals and parasite anti-infectives. The successful candidate will combine genomics and bioinformatics expertise with the ability to work closely with experimentalists on infectious diseases drug discovery projects in a matrix working environment in collaboration with the local data science team in the department of Chemical Biology & Therapeutics.

The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will be to participate in the drug discovery research efforts of the virology and parasitology groups, with a focus on helping assess and prioritize potential new virus and parasite targets using sequence and structure evolutionary analysis. Additionally, the bioinformatician will apply their knowledge of genomics and analytical methods across multiple data types including sequence, structure, and image data, to enhance and accelerate ongoing drug discovery projects.

What you’ll bring to the role:
• Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, data science, or related field.
• Demonstrated ability to present complex data science concepts in digestible terms to diverse scientific audiences.
• Demonstrated strong scientific curiosity, initiative, and learning agility.
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team (biologists, chemists, data scientists, etc.), with strong communication skills (verbal, written, virtual) and track record of publishing scientific research.
• Expertise working in Linux environments; high performance computing experience preferred.
• Expertise in scripting languages, experience with Python scientific stack, track record of building custom scientific software.
• Deep experience with genome and sequence analysis; experience working with NGS data.
• Experience identifying, curating, and integrating data from internal and external sources.

Minimum Requirements

Additional desired skills:
• Demonstrated understanding of viral / parasite life cycle and evolution.
• Hands-on experience applying machine learning to experimental data.
• Practical experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL).
• Hands-on experience working with high content imaging or 3D structure data.
• Knowledge of drug discovery and development process.
