One purpose...to reimagine medicine. NIBR Oncology has a long and highly impactful track record in discovering and commercializing novel cancer therapies. We are seeking a PhD and/or MD professional who is a scientific leader in the field of oncology and has at least 10 years of experience in Oncology drug discovery. This individual will lead the Cambridge oncology drug discovery group with a broad portfolio of small molecules and biotherapeutics programs and will define the biology and drug discovery strategy for novel drug discovery projects, spanning from early-stage validation until completion of IND enabling studies.

The Head, Oncology Drug Discovery, Cambridge will report to the Global Head of Oncology, NIBR and will be a member of the Global Oncology Leadership Team. This individual will lead all oncology drug discovery activities (biology, biochemistry, cell biology and in vivo pharmacology) for the NIBR Cambridge Oncology Drug Discovery (ODD) Site. The Head, ODD, Cambridge will be in an outstanding position managing a portfolio of both small molecules and biologics, and should bring expertise in both those platforms to our organization. In partnership with other drug discovery site heads and functional leaders, this individual will also lead and drive new areas of scientific investment in drug discovery including novel targets, novel therapeutic modalities and external collaborations and partnerships. The Head, ODD, Cambridge will also play a crucial role in working with the Business Development and Licensing (BD&L) group by driving external opportunities that enable us to deliver on our strategy and helping with prioritization and decision making on such opportunities. This individual will contribute to the overall oncology scientific and discovery strategy, and portfolio management & operations and with other drug discovery site heads and functional leaders ensure that we are delivering on our strategy, taking data driven go/no go decisions and resourcing and prioritizing programs accordingly.

By applying innovative and interdisciplinary thinking toward the development of novel drugs to treat cancer, the Head, ODD, Cambridge will be responsible for crafting an innovative and competitive portfolio spanning a diverse array of modalities (small molecules with diverse MOA, biologics, antibody drug conjugates) as well as a broad range of therapeutic approaches (direct tumor targeting, immune cell engagers, etc.). In addition to a strong track record in Oncology drug discovery and early development, this individual will bring experience and passion for leading, and mentoring a team of scientists, inherent curiosity to explore innovative approaches to treating cancer, and strong communication skills. The Head, ODD, Cambridge is expected to be impactful in the global network externally and within and beyond the NIBR Oncology Disease Area, by ensuring effective alignment with the appropriate experts in the Novartis matrix organization to drive discovery programs efficiently and successfully.


ORGANIZATION LEADERSHIP AND OVERSIGHT:
- Has responsibility for all aspects of Oncology drug discovery programs led in Cambridge MA spanning biology, biochemistry and cell biology (both mechanistic and SAR based assays), and in vivo efficacy/pharmacology.

- Develops and leads innovative scientific strategies and programs in oncology drug discovery including targeted therapies, antibody drug conjugates and immune cell engagers.

- Prioritizes projects and resources to ensure success from project conception through IND enabling studies

- Serves as a member of the NIBR Oncology Leadership Team to assess projects and set strategy for the global oncology research portfolio at Novartis, provides critical input on global prioritization and resourcing decisions in order to deliver on the oncology portfolio and complete our strategy.

- Serves as a standing member of the Integrated Cancer Disease Area Disease Board, where all governance and portfolio decisions are made for NIBR Oncology DA.

- Defines and manages collaborations within Novartis and with external partners

Minimum Requirements

- PhD and/or MD ideally with a focus on biology, pharmacology, or related field of study.

- Minimum 10 years of experience in drug discovery and development

- Comprehensive, in-depth knowledge of cancer biology and drug discovery and development.

- Proven track record in advancing oncology therapies from idea through IND for both small molecules and biologics.

- Consistent experience leading senior direct reports with a track record developing talent and building teams.

- Require a strong publication track record within the field of oncology in high impact journals (i.e. Nature, Cell, Science, Cancer Discovery, Cancer Cell) as corresponding or senior author. Recognized externally as a leader in the field of oncology/oncology drug discovery.

- Prior experience partnering with translational medicine and early clinical development is highly preferred.

- Experience leading both small molecules and biologics (antibody) programs is required ideally with a solid track record of advancing antibody drug conjugate and T-cell engager programs into clinical development.

- Prior experience leading a team responsible for multiple high impact projects is preferred.
