Job Description

Novartis as the world’s fourth largest pharmaceutical company with more than $50bn net sales, more than $12bn net income, sales in 155 countries and total tax expense of around USD 2B. These are the underlying numbers that need to be managed from a Tax & Accounting perspective!

·Reviewing of quarterly and year-end tax provision schedules (with regional focus) under the principles of IAS 12, including, but not limited to:
a. Review of current and deferred tax calculations of the Novartis group entities and providing feedback to local teams;
b. Support the preparation and review of required global/ consolidated footnotes and disclosures tables with the use of the Novartis global tax reporting solutions;
c. Managing workflows from foreign jurisdictions to Group and liaise with local controllers and/or tax specialists about their input for the quarterly provision process. Make sure their work is performed in a timely, accurate, effective and efficient way
· Put in place and/or review of global supporting documentation around material tax reporting positions such as DTA recovery analysis, the accounting for tax risks and the accounting for outside basis differences
· Coordinate (inclusive reviewing) the quarterly International IAS 34 and annual tax accounting calculations for all jurisdictions, including effective tax rate analysis and DTA recovery analysis
· Review quarterly tax account roll forwards and reconciliation schedules like deferred balance roll forwards, variance studies of the effective tax rate and tax effects in OCI/ equity
· Review of consolidated reports in relation to ETR and cash tax forecasting processes inclusive scenario analysis and modelling
· Preparing condensed and meaningful reports about the tax performance for Senior Management/ Leadership
· Assist in writing and/ or reviewing of clear and concise technical memorandum supporting tax issues (e.g. tax risk documentation, tax accounting policies, DTA recovery assessments)
· Supportive to identifying tax and accounting issues and recommending solutions/opportunities for improvement
· Work with Group and Local tax on tax matters relevant to the tax reporting processes as necessary
· Participate and drive setting up, preparing and facilitating trainings for tax accounting teams and local finance teams
· Initiate and lead Special Projects to transform/ improve the tax reporting processes. Projects could relate to the integration of workflow tools (e.g. SharePoint), accounting software (SAP), and tax provision software (e.g. OneSource Tax Provision, Longview, SAP PaPM)
· Provide thought leadership to ensure that upcoming regulatory changes can be absorbed in an efficient and effective manner
· Contribute to the (tax) reporting and compliance awareness/ appreciation within the Novartis Group and service oriented towards the Group’s Organizations like Treasury, Finance, Legal, Business, Tax, etc

Minimum Requirements

·Degree (Bachelor or Master) required; a Tax Degree is a plus
·Ideally, 8 to 10 years’ work experience in the area of tax reporting within in a large corporate tax environment and/or big 4 accounting firm.
· Management experience working within a Matrix, functional leadership responsibility
· Strong technical and practical understanding of tax accounting concepts under IFRS (or US GAAP)
· Solid knowledge of international income tax principles and the interaction thereof with tax accounting principles
· Practical experience with the following (tax) accounting solutions is a plus:
o SAP and consolidation solutions like HFM, FCRS, Delta Master
o Global Tax reporting solutions like OneSource Tax Provision, Longview, SAP PaPM
