60 million adults in the US experience mental illness in a given year. In about 13 million of these patients, the illness is severe and substantially interferes with one or more major aspects of their lives. The Neuroscience Department at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research is committed to developing transformative therapies to treat such disorders.
We are seeking an experienced and a highly passionate scientist to join our In Vivo Electrophysiology lab. The individual will design and execute experiments in genetic and pharmacological rodent models using in vivo electrophysiology approaches to support multiple programs in neuropsychiatric, neurodevelopmental, and neurodegenerative disorders. The successful hire will also assist in developing novel assays and analytical approaches to generate preclinical and translational, disease-relevant endpoints.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Design and execute in vivo electrophysiology assays such as resting state EEG, auditory-evoked potentials, seizure detection, local field potentials
• Perform extensive animal handling, dosing, and surgical procedures
• Use computational approaches (e.g. ,Matlab, Python) to analyze electrophysiology data
• Analyze and interpret data and present findings to project teams

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelors in Neuroscience or a related discipline with a minimum of 4 years of industry/academic experience or a master’s with a minimum of 2 years of experience or a PhD
• Proven ability to build and/or troubleshoot electrophysiology-based assays
• Proficiency with EEG signal processing using Matlab or Python
• Extensive hands-on experience in animal handling and dosing (IP, SC, PO, etc.)
• Experience in stereotaxic surgery, electrode implantation
• Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and oral) to help the team achieve deliverables and meet aggressive timelines
• Excellent ability to work in a collaborative, team-based environment

Preferred qualifications:
• Basic understanding of neurophysiology and neural circuitry
• Knowledge of subcutaneous implantations
• Programming experience in Matlab/Python to develop novel analytical approaches
• Familiarity with animal surgical procedures including post-operative care
