Job Description

Principal Scientist to Associate Director, Translational Modeling & Simulation (oligonucleotide therapeutics)

6000! That is the number of associates in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

The PK Sciences / Translational Modeling & Simulation group is embedded within Translational Medicine, the clinical research arm of NIBR. Our main objective is to enable quantitative approaches to rigorous decision making from target identification to first-in-human studies and beyond. Novartis is a leader in oligonucleotide therapeutics, and we are seeking a curious and proactive modeler to contribute to the design, characterization, and delivery of these new therapies. This is a rapidly advancing field with untapped potential for computational modeling to drive insights across disease areas with both forward and reverse translational approaches.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Act as the Translational M&S representative on several oligonucleotide therapy programs by developing and executing modeling strategies, contributing to project team discussions, and guiding decisions such as therapeutic design and dose selection.
• Build and apply quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) models that link drug pharmacology, mechanism(s) of action, and biological outcomes. This will include application of physiologically based PK (PBPK) modeling to better understand the biodistribution of different delivery platforms (e.g., antibody or GalNAc conjugates) and how this affects the safety and efficacy of the therapeutic.
• Contribute to the development of an integrated modeling platform for oligonucleotide therapies that bridges data and knowledge between preclinical species and patients, partnering with discovery project teams, preclinical safety, and pharmacometrics groups.
• Contribute to programs across therapeutic modalities and disease indications, as needed. Novartis has a broad portfolio with hundreds of drug discovery and clinical development projects and you will have opportunities to grow and develop as you apply modeling insights to projects beyond oligonucleotide therapies. This includes the modeling of low molecular weight compounds, biologics, and cell & gene therapies.
• Proactively seek opportunities to increase the impact and awareness of translational modeling through communications with internal and external audiences.
• A modeler at the Sr. Principal Scientist or Associate Director level will have additional strategic responsibilities within the group and will also have opportunities to serve as a M&S subject area expert across PK Sciences and NIBR initiatives.

Diversity & Inclusion / EEO

The Novartis Group of Companies are Equal Opportunity Employers and take pride in maintaining a diverse environment. We do not discriminate in recruitment, hiring, training, promotion or other employment practices for reasons of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital or veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected status. We are committed to building diverse teams, representative of the patients and communities we serve, and we strive to create an inclusive workplace that cultivates bold innovation through collaboration and empowers our people to unleash their full potential.

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:
• Ph.D. in biology, pharmacology, bioengineering, biophysics, or a related field. Candidates with backgrounds in mathematics or other quantitative fields with a deep understanding of biological concepts or a master’s degree with 4+ years of industry experience will be considered.
• Prior experience in quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP), pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PKPD), and/or physiologically based PK (PBPK) modeling is strongly preferred. Prior experience with the modeling of oligonucleotide therapies (e.g., siRNA or ASO) is preferred.
• Expert-level proficiency in core modeling fundamentals is required, including scripting languages (e.g., MATLAB, R), construction of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models, parameter estimation, and data visualization.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate modeling results to a multidisciplinary audience for collaborative work and/or to facilitate strategy and decision-making.
• Fluent in English (oral and written).
• This is a dual posting. The final level & title of the offered role will be determined by the hiring team based on the skills, experience, and capabilities required to perform the role. A recent graduate or postdoctoral scholar will be considered for the Principal Scientist I level, while more experienced candidates with demonstrated impact as a modeler in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry may be considered for the PS II level. A Senior Principal Scientist / Associate Director will be expected to have extensive industry experience with demonstrated impact via both modeling execution and strategic initiatives.

There are two positions available, and candidates can be considered for both (345275BR).
