The Pre-Clinical Safety (PCS) group in NIBR provides world class preclinical safety profiling and assessment for optimal drug discovery, development and commercialization, with state-of-the-art regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate will join the PCS Mechanistic and Predictive Safety line function and support translational safety assessment of diverse compounds and therapeutic modalities through mechanistic insight, human relevance assessment, and prediction of drug toxicities. She/he will lead a laboratory of experienced scientists to design and implement advanced investigative biochemical and cellular assays, including primary and iPSC-derived cellular models, organoids, and Micro-Physiological Systems (MPS).

Your responsibilities will include:
- Leads and manages successfully a team of mechanistic safety scientists.
- Undertakes general project management of laboratory work (planning, execution, monitoring, closing) and generate reports of high quality in a timely manner.
- The principal scientist is expected to contribute to laboratory experimental activities including training.
- Ensures prioritization of projects for maximal portfolio impact and strategic use of resources.
- Participates in PCS project teams to provide guidance on mechanistic experimental approaches for problem solving.
- Leads cross-divisional NIBR teams for in vitro safety studies, spearheading collaborations with biotechnology companies and/or academic institutions and may participate in or lead international consortia.
- Supervision of a PhD student and visiting scientists
- Cultivates matrix leadership to positively influence a collaborative culture, facilitate talent development, enable initiatives, and strengthen cross-functional relationships, in particular between PCS line function and therapeutic area subject matter experts.
- Ensures the conduct of activities in compliance with Novartis Code of Conduct, safety, animal welfare, waste disposal and other regulatory guidelines.

Minimum Requirements

• PhD or equivalent graduation in Toxicology, Cell Biology or a related Biological Science field
• Proven track record of successful people management
• Possesses a strong teamwork mindset, working both collegially and collaboratively. Is flexible, adaptable and good team player.
• Extensive experience with a broad range of molecular, biochemical and cell biology methods including complex in vitro models.
• Proven expertise in protein biochemistry, cellular metabolism and/or tissue physiology would be advantageous.
• Experience with integration & visualization of complex data
• Working experience with human tissue derivatives or human primary cells.
• Independent judgment, decision-making and action on complex scientific experiments and highly specialized techniques.
• Proven track record of successful project management
• Working knowledge of relevant IT systems (eg, MS Office, Graphpad Prism, Spotfire)
• Extensive literature research skills.
• Good knowledge of pharmaceutical industry practices/drug development processes.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
