Job Description

Novartis Pharma is looking for a student interested in a 6-month internship at the Basel campus in Technical Research and Development, with a particular focus on developing equipment to conduct continuous hydrogenations using heterogeneous catalyst in a fixed-bed configuration. The position will start in September of 2022 and extend for six months. Chemical & Analytical Development (CHAD) plays an essential role in the development of processes for manufacturing of Small Molecule Drug Substance from the time it leaves the discovery laboratory until it is handed over to commercial production. The candidate will work in close collaboration with senior chemical engineers, chemists and laboratory technicians and be involved in the development and optimization of chemical processes for small molecule projects.

Your responsibilities include:
• Modify an existing process development laboratory unit to enable heterogeneous hydrogenation reactions to be performed on a continuous basis in a trickle bed configuration.
• Operation of the process development laboratory unit including packing and testing of the trickle bed reactor for selected chemical transformations.
• Characterization of the fixed trickle bed column using selected variables as inputs (residence time, gas equivalents, temperature, packing arrangement) and measuring hydrodynamic, kinetic and thermodynamic outputs (reaction conversion and yield, pressure drop as function of flow rate, temperature profiles).
• Establish a procedure for scale-up of heterogeneous reactions to large commercial scale based on learnings on the laboratory scale.

Minimum Requirements

• Highly motivated student currently enrolled in a Master's degree or recent graduate in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Pharmaceutical science. Graduation no longer than one year ago.
• Background in hydrogenation reactions or other gas-liquid reaction types in batch or continuous mode, high-pressure processing or reactions at extreme conditions of temperature and pressure (student projects, internships in academia and industry).
• Advanced laboratory technique/experience with good knowledge in organic chemistry, process monitoring and control and analytics (NMR, GC, HPLC, MS).
• Well organized, interested in R&D and development of methodologies.
• Proficiency in English, oral & written. Proficiency in German or French would be an additional asset.

We are looking for an independent and scientifically curious recent graduate with a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. Since this is a temporary position for up to six months, it could be suited for a candidate planning to bridge between MSc or BSc and further career steps.
