6000! That’s the number of associates in the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR). This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

The structural biology department is looking for a highly motivated entry level Senior Scientist to express, purify and prepare high quality protein samples for structural biology studies (x-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy). The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team that supports early-stage small molecule and biologic drug discovery programs by providing structural data and protein reagents for assay development.

Responsibilities to include, but not limited to:

• Cloning and expression of protein targets for structural biology and assay development.
• Design and implementation of expression/purification protocols for new targets.
• Characterization of purified proteins using standard techniques (SDS-PAGE, LCMS, anSEC, light scattering).
• Troubleshoot expression and purification protocols.
• Present scientific and technical work
• Write technical reports and SOPs
• Interact with various project teams across both NIBR San Diego and the larger Novartis organization

The Senior Scientist II Level may have the following additional responsibilities:

•Effectively runs complex experiments and/or takes opportunity to bring new techniques into lab.
•Practices efficient time management focuses on deliverables and is able to effectively prioritize when designing/undertaking experimental plan.
•Analyzes and communicates own results to department/project meetings. Regularly (if role requires) provides input to internal/ external publications.
•Broadens technical knowledge via departmental activities, literature reading and experiential learning.
•Possesses basic knowledge of all techniques undertaken across own lab(s).
•Utilizes established networks and builds new network connections, including outside of existing project team. May provide input on external collaborations.
•Mentors’ junior member(s) of lab and/or project team. Influences within line function.
•Utilizes growing awareness of the drug discovery and/or early development pipeline to identify complex problems, present innovative solutions and drive their implementation. Key member of drug discovery/technology/development project teams with regular accountability within the project for own area of expertise.

Minimum Requirements

What you'll bring to the role:

*The level of the position will be commensurate with education, applicable experience, competency and independence.

•BS or MS in biochemistry or related field
•Senior Scientist I level - at least 1 year of experience in common protein purification methods (Affinity, IMAC, SEC) and molecular biology techniques (cloning, DNA isolation, transformation, etc.)
•Senior Scientist II level - at least 5 years of experience in common protein purification methods (Affinity, IMAC, SEC) and molecular biology techniques (cloning, DNA isolation, transformation, etc.)
•Expertise in developing purification protocols for novel targets is desired. Experience with common recombinant expression systems, E. coli, baculovirus, etc.
•Familiarity with analytical and biophysical methods (light scattering, ITC, DSC, LCMS, anSEC, etc.) and laboratory automation is highly desirable.
•High degree of self-motivation and attention to detail
•Strong organizational and time management skills
•Desire to learn/operate across numerous functions (expression, purification, analytics and structural biology).
