This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients. The NIBR Biologics Center (NBC) is housed within the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). NBC, in collaboration with the disease areas and other platform groups, builds the future biologics therapeutic pipeline of Novartis through the discovery and creation of new antibody, protein, nucleic acid and virus-based molecules.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist in our protein production team. You will be part of a cross-functional team responsible for profiling and production of protein drug substances. In this role, you will be responsible for protein purification at lab-scale (milligrams to grams) from CHO expression systems to supply material for developability assessment and pre-clinical studies. You will also support evaluation of downstream processes to identify manufacturability challenges for clinical development.

What you’ll be doing:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Execute lab-scale purification processes for production of monoclonal antibodies and therapeutic proteins to meet internal and external material requests
• Effectively manage production timelines and coordinate all material supply and logistics
• Work closely with the analytical team to coordinate in-process control sample preparation and delivery to enable decisions on a suitable production process
• Perform activities independently under guidance of a senior team member
• Able to multi-task to support several projects
• Accurate and timely processing of all data, prepare summary presentations, write technical reports, and present in cross-functional teams
• Work independently and collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team.

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:
• B.S. or M.S. degree in Biochemistry, Biochemical /Chemical Engineering, or a similar life science field with some experience (minimum of 1 year for BS) in protein purification & in operating AKTA systems
• Proficient in executing lab-scale protein purification processes for production of therapeutic proteins up to multiple-gram scale
• Knowledge of basic protein analytical techniques- UV-Vis measurements, CE-SDS/gel electrophoresis and size-exclusion chromatography analysis
• Highly self-motivated, ability to work well in a cross-functional team and have effective communication skills

• Hands-on experience in purification of monoclonal antibodies, antibody fragments and/or therapeutic proteins in an industrial setting
• Hands-on experience with AKTA instruments (1-3 years) and a good understanding of different modes of protein chromatography techniques to remove process and product-related impurities
• Some experience with packing columns and performing resin scouting studies

Physical Requirements: Occasional lifting of 10-20L containers
