The department for Autoimmunity, Transplantation and Inflammation (ATI) within the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) is investigating the discovery of innovative and transformative therapies to improve the lives of patients suffering from autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. As part of this effort, ATI is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Lab head to initiate and guide research and drug discovery efforts in the area of immunodermatology. The position will be based in Basel, Switzerland.

Major Accountabilities

You will
• lead a state-of-the-art laboratory of BSc/MSc level scientists to discover and develop novel therapies for treatment of inflammatory skin diseases.
• contribute to unravel the pathomechanism of complex inflammatory skin diseases and increase our molecular disease understanding
• validate novel therapeutic targets and establish biochemical and cellular and ex-vivo assay systems
• contribute to and/or lead early drug discovery projects within multidisciplinary teams up to clinical proof-of-concept studies in patients
• collaborate with scientists, clinicians, and technology experts across different departments in the global organization and academia
• evaluate internal and external assets scientifically and support sound business decisions
• Your scientific work will continue to result in impactful publications in peer-reviewed journals, patent applications and presentations at international conferences

Minimum Requirements


• A PhD degree with several years of postdoctoral experience, strong technical and theoretical background/expertise of research in immunology and/or dermatology.


• Significant scientific accomplishments and successful collaborations documented by publications in high-impact journals.
• Proven track record of leadership, strategic thinking, creativity, and risk taking.
• Excellent communication, presentation and analytical skills.
• Mind-set of a strong team player, experience in working in a matrix environment and cross-functional teams.

Desirable requirements:

• Track record as an independent research scientist in an academic setting and/or in the pharmaceutical/biotech sector.
• Experience in preclinical drug discovery in pharmaceutical industry or biotech setting is a strong plus
• Proven success in independently initiating and leading projects.


• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, German desirable
