The global discovery chemistry department (GDC) is looking for highly motivated scientists skilled in synthetic chemistry to support programs in the thematic areas of cancer research, regenerative medicine, covalent drug discovery, and siRNA. The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team along with other drug discovery disciplines to craft new synthetic molecules that will drive the future of medicine.

Primary responsibilities:
Independently design new compounds with a hypothesis driven approach, utilizing novel methodologies, target-based design, and approaches that include automation and modern flow chemistry.
Carry out multi-step syntheses of small molecules and utilize modern purification equipment. This includes identifying and solving synthetic issues to drive highest quality compound production.
Perform structure activity relationship (SAR) analysis on biological assay data for related biological targets, follow up with new hypothesis and experiments.
Communicate and present scientific and technical work to colleagues.
Collaborate with scientific teams across the San Diego and global Novartis sites
Adhere to laboratory safety policies and practices including the use of electronic record keeping

Minimum Requirements

What You'll Bring to the Role:

BS degree in organic chemistry and 4+ years of industry or closely related academic lab experience

A good knowledge of modern organic synthetic methods with a strong basis in functional group transformations and cross couplings methods, with medicinal chemistry knowledge a plus.

Skilled in common small molecule purification and analytical techniques including normal and reverse phase chromatography and LCMS methods

Strong problem solving and communication skills with a collaboration mindset

Desired Qualifications:
Master’s degree in organic chemistry
