The Neuroscience Department with Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is dedicated to discovering and developing groundbreaking therapies for serious diseases of the nervous system. The psychiatry team is focused on applying leading edge approaches to develop new therapeutics for these psychiatric diseases. This position is an opportunity to help create and advance such life-changing therapies.

As a new Principal Scientist I in the Neuroscience Psychiatry group, you will have the opportunity to reimagine medicine by developing innovative treatments that can improve lives and health of patients suffering from psychiatric disease. You will join a vibrant scientific community and collaborate with other scientists within the neuroscience division as well as across other NIBR disciplines and platforms, including genetics, therapeutic discovery, global discovery chemistry, data science, biomarker development, and translational medicine.

Your key responsibilities:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• You will identify key unmet needs in the psychiatric disease space and propose novel therapeutic solutions
• You will initiate and lead drug discovery efforts on high-value targets, applying innovative approaches and technologies
• You will develop hit-finding and lead-optimization strategies for relevant small molecule or biologic programs
• You will lead a matrixed team of highly talented and multi-disciplinary scientists responsible for small molecule and / or biologic screening, prioritization and validation
• You will be responsible for leading the team to achieve deliverables and meet aggressive timelines

Minimum Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:

• PhD in relevant discipline
• 2 years of relevant postdoc/industry experience in identifying and validating new targets and/or leading innovative drug discovery programs focused on central nervous system disorders
• Self-starter with a proven track record of high caliber lab research backed by a strong publication record
• Outstanding technical ability at the bench as well as a proven ability to effectively manage teams and/or collaborative interactions
• Deep expertise in cellular neurobiology and/or molecular biology and/or assay development combined with a broad understanding of disease mechanisms underlying psychiatric diseases
• Skilled in experimental design, data analysis and data interpretation
• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Experience in selecting and advancing novel drug discovery approaches
• Experience in advancing programs from early pre-clinical to clinical stage
• Proactive attitude with the ability and desire to multi-task
• A results-driven mentality with a sense of urgency and commitment to the goals of our mission
