Job Description

NIBR (Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research) Emeryville, California, houses approximately 170 associates and includes medicinal chemistry, computer-assisted drug discovery, structural and biophysical chemistry, protein sciences, compound management, Institute for Tropical Disease research, a protein interactomics drug discovery center and analytical chemistry. Located in the heart of a key academic and biotechnology center, NIBR Emeryville collaborates with local institutions such as Stanford and the University of California campuses in Berkeley and San Francisco.

We seek a self-motivated, PhD-level scientist with extensive experience in structural biology to join our team in the Structural and Biophysical Chemistry group (SBC). The SBC is a multidisciplinary team with expertise in X-ray crystallography, NMR, and biophysics. Our team collaborates with scientists across NIBR at the frontiers of chemical biology, chemical genomics, data sciences, and disease biology to identify opportunities for next generation therapeutics. Our goal is to identify and develop small molecules with the potential for modulating diseases, and we support drug discovery projects in various therapeutic areas like oncology, immune-oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, immunology and neurological diseases.

The (Sr) Principal scientist will be an integral member of structure-based drug discovery teams, providing structural biology expertise to advance early drug discovery efforts, design and conduct innovative experiments to solve key scientific questions, communicate effectively and efficiently in team meetings and in review sessions, and collaboratively work with other scientists to develop innovative medicines. This role will impact our local discovery efforts and the global discovery portfolio through bench-level contributions.

Your responsibilities:

• Independently design, develop, implement and crystallographic and other structural biology techniques to support the Structure-based Drug Discovery efforts at Novartis. Analyze interpret and communicate results to the project teams. Document results in NIBR databases and notebooks, and communicate results to teams.
• Collaborate with members of the Structural and Biophysical Chemistry, Protein Science, CADD, and Medicinal Chemistry Groups to enable successful SBDD. Collaborate with interdisciplinary project teams globally to optimally drive the NIBR portfolio
• Contribute to cross-functional small molecule drug discovery project teams and provide expertise to enable key project decision points
• Contribute to multiple projects in parallel
• Identify opportunities to employ structural and biophysical methods to impact drug discovery.
• Identify innovations in structural methods for drug discovery. Apply or learn additional methods (e.g. biochemical, biophysical, or other analytical method) to early-stage discovery programs
• Be part of the local and global NIBR community by supporting our Curious, Inspired and Unbossed culture at Novartis

• Deep knowledge of structural biology as evidenced by authorships on high-profile publications
• Extensive experience in protein structural biology including construct design, protein expression, purification, characterization, crystallization, structure determination, and analysis.
• Experience with crystallization robotics such as Dragonfly, Mosquito, Formulator, and Rock Imager.
• Experience with X-ray data collection on both internal and synchrotron data sources.
• Experience with crystallographic software such as XDS, CCP4, Phenix, Buster, Coot, and Pymol.
• Excellent written and oral communication to allow for rapid progression of our structure-based drug design efforts.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience determining the structures of large macromolecular complexes
• Experience with single particle cryo-EM, including sample preparation, data collection, processing, and three-dimensional reconstruction.
• Working knowledge of structure-based drug design
• Experience with fragment-based drug discovery
