Senior Scientist I: Protein Engineering

This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients. NIBR Biologics Center (NBC) builds the biologics pipeline in collaboration with NIBR Disease Areas (DA) and Platforms to create innovative biotherapeutics that can improve lives of patients. We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Senior Scientist to join the Bio-therapeutic Engineering and Gene Therapy (BEGT) unit within the NBC in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The BEGT group drives a diverse portfolio of biologics drug discovery programs including various protein modalities, gene and cell therapies through novel vector engineering and structure-based rational design. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Implement state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools, structural modelling and structure-based rational design approaches to improve functional and biophysical properties of proteins, peptides, and other novel biologics modalities to support biologics discovery programs
• Design and conduct experiments to express, purify and characterize engineered protein variants
• Interpret and present data and findings in internal project meetings
• Communicate efficiently and represent protein engineering group in cross-functional team
• Support other research activities within group as needed

Minimum Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
• An advanced degree in biochemistry, structural biology, molecular biology, protein/antibody engineering or related fields with 0-3 years post graduate (PhD) or 3-5 years (master) experience in academia or industry
• Proficient skills in using molecular biology software (such as SnapGene) for construct design and DNA sequence analysis
• Experience in recombinant protein expression techniques in bacterial and mammalian cell system
• Expertise with protein purification methods including affinity, IEX, SEC and HIC. Familiar with Akta FPLC systems
• Strong knowledge of protein characterization techniques to evaluate protein quality/stability, such as SDS-PAGE, Western blot, BioCore, analytical HPLC, DLS, DSF and SEC-MALS
• Demonstrated success in protein structural modeling and protein design required
• Working knowledge of bioinformatics tools and databases
• Experience with one or more of the following software suites, such as MOE, AlphaFold, Schrodinger, Rosetta, Discovery Studio
• Excellent team player with collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills to work with cross functional/departmental teams to drive drug discovery projects
Desirable requirements:
• Knowledge of ML/AI methods preferred; Experience with compiled languages is a plus
