150 million people worldwide are living with Neurodegenerative diseases. Here, at the Neuroscience department at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, we are looking for an experienced scientist to join a multidisciplinary team aimed to improve the life and health of these patients.

The Neuroscience Disease Area in NIBRI is looking for an experienced Principal Scientist with knowledge of neuroscience and histology to perform tissue-based analysis in support of discovery and validation of disease relevant neuroscience targets and pathways.

• Directly supervise all Neuroscience Histology Associates
• Collaborate with Project Team Leads to set priorities and timelines
• Manage and assign projects to histology team members
• Responsible for all aspects of sample registration including receipt, logging and gross-dissection
• Experienced in all standard histology procedures; tissue processing, embedding, sectioning and routine histological staining of fresh, frozen and paraffin-embedded tissues and cell lines
• Accomplished in both IHC and RNAScope ISH assay selection, evaluation and optimization using a Ventana Discovery Ultra platform. This will involve both chromogenic and fluorescent single staining and multiplexing
• Slide scanning using a Leica AT2 platform, Zeiss Axio Scan.Z1 and e-slide manager database
• Experienced in image analysis algorithm development and processing using Indica Lab HALO software and Prism Graph Pad
• Generate data and report findings to project teams
• Train junior staff in all laboratory procedures

Minimum Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
• B.S/M.S/PhD degree in molecular biology, clinical pathology or related field and 10+/7+/5+ years of focused histology experience
• Demonstrated expertise with tissue-based assays including histochemical stains, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence
• Expertise in standard histological techniques including grossing, processing, embedding, and paraffin sectioning required
• Knowledge of neuroanatomy and neuropathology required
• Prior experience working on neuroscience projects highly desirable
• Extensive experience with automated equipment
• Extensive experience with image analysis
• Thorough computer literacy (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are required
• Fluency in English (oral and written) is required
• Mentorship and oversight of laboratory and junior staff highly preferred
