The CBT Data Science group at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Emeryville, CA, is seeking a talented data scientist to impact preclinical research towards the discovery of new drugs. The successful candidate will combine life and data science expertise with the ability to work collaboratively with both experimental and computational scientists in a locally focused, globally integrated team.

Your responsibility:

The successful candidate will join a small team of data scientists in the Bay Area to glean scientific insights from internally generated and externally curated experimental data to impact Novartis’s drug discovery portfolio. The candidate will work with local project teams across the Emeryville Protein Interactomics Center (EPICenter) and the co-located Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) to identify and implement data science approaches with the goal of accelerating and elevating drug discovery projects. The successful candidate will develop, drive, and execute their own research agenda in alignment with experimental and computational stakeholders. Additionally, they will serve as a key connection point in the data science community between Emeryville’s local efforts to innovate novel drug modalities and parallel efforts globally across NIBR.

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:

• Ph.D. in data science, computational biology, bioinformatics, or related field; relevant industry experience preferred.
• Demonstrated strong scientific curiosity, initiative, and learning agility.
• Demonstrated ability to identify and execute on opportunities to enhance collaborative projects with data science.
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team (biologists, chemists, data scientists, etc.).
• Demonstrated ability to present complex data science concepts in digestible terms to diverse scientific audiences.
• Strong communication skills (verbal, written, virtual).
• Expertise working in Linux environments; high performance computing experience preferred.
• Expertise in scripting languages, such as Python or R.
• Expertise using the Python scientific stack or R tidyverse packages.
• Hands-on experience applying machine learning (deep learning preferred) to experimental data.
• Hands-on experience working with one or more of the following data types: 3D structure data, Next Generation Sequencing data, high content imaging data.
• Experience in identifying, curating, and integrating internal and external data sources.
• Practical experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL).
• Track record of building custom scientific software or machine learning models.
• Track record of publishing scientific research or method development.
