Job Description

The Respiratory Disease Area at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is dedicated to discovering new therapies for diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Asthma and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. The group’s primary responsibilities are the discovery and validation of new targets, performing in vitro and in vivo experiments that support the selection of clinical candidates and the coordination of preclinical activities to ensure a smooth progression of candidates through the development process.

We are seeking an outstanding lab-based Research Scientist to join our collaborative, cross-functional team to accelerate the biology characterization of drug targets and advance the preclinical development of future medicines for IPF and COPD. Successful candidates will have laboratory experience and good knowledge in cell biology, with emphasis on the use of human primary lung cells to explore biology and drug mechanism of action.

What you will do:

- Design, develop and implement cell-based assays (primary and cell lines) to support drug discovery programs in IPF and COPD

- Perform cell biology experiments to explore and validate the biology of genetically relevant drug targets in IPF and COPD

- Generate, record, interpret and present results at group and project meetings

- Be an important part of a larger multi-disciplinary team and bring your energy to maintain and evolve our highly collaborative culture

Minimum Requirements

What You'll Bring to the Role:

- A Bachelors or Master’s degree in biological sciences with 1-4 years of laboratory experience

- Hands-on experience in mammalian primary cell biology assays. Additional experience with biochemical and molecular biology techniques is preferred although not essential (training will be provided)

- Experience in live cell-based imaging assays is desirable

- A sound knowledge and ability to learn epithelial biology and human lung disease

- Be proactive and self-motivated with strong analytical, organizational and troubleshooting skills

- Outstanding interpersonal skills and an important member of a larger team
