2 million people around the world die every year of liver disease, making it the 11th most common cause of death globally. Kidney disease impacts 14% of the population, many of whom will progress to kidney failure. 500+ million people worldwide suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Recent advances in understanding the molecular basis of liver, kidney, lung diseases, as well as development of exciting new technologies, enables Novartis scientists to creatively and strategically pursue novel therapies to help these patients.

Disease Area X (DAx) a division within Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is seeking a curious and experienced scientist to join our histology team, to perform tissue-based analysis in support of discovery and validation of animal models with relevant targets and pathways.

Your Responsibilities will include:

- Performing standard histology procedures including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, staining and image capture of fresh, frozen and paraffin-embedded tissues and cell lines

- Developing histochemical assays using various modalities including engineered antibodies, antibody mimetics and nucleic acids.

- Perform routine IHC analysis

- Generate frozen or paraffin-embedded tissue sections including tissue microarrays for use in ISH, IHC and standard histopathology analyses

- Performing microscopy image analysis and processing

- The candidate is encouraged to pro-actively interact with project teams and collaborators to work out experimental plans, prepare a report and present their results

- In addition, the candidate should coordinate activities, establish standard methodologies and align/share tools and capabilities with other team members and respective skill-based groups within Novartis

- Displays competence in the operation, calibration and troubleshooting of all laboratory instrumentation routinely employed.

- Assists in the maintenance of laboratory inventories and equipment. May assist in the development and/or validation of new methodologies and instrumentation as needed.

Minimum Requirements

What You'll Bring to the Role:

- B.S. and/or M.S. degree in histology, biology, clinical pathology or related fields and at least 3-5 years (B.S.), or 2+ years (M.S.) of related professional experience

- Demonstrated expertise in cell- and tissue-based assays including histology, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence applications and microscopy.

- Expertise in standard histological techniques and routine IHC

- Knowledge of microscopy, image analysis and processing

- Detailed digital literacy (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

- Fluency in English (oral and written)

Desirable Skills:

- Experience with automated equipment (Autostainer, Scanner, etc.)
