Multi-omics Data Scientist

Sep 28, 2021

Job Description

45 data scientists forming a multicultural and multidisciplinary team passionate for hunting drugs and targets, pre-clinical model characterization, understanding disease mechanisms, developing and applying computational approaches to catalyze early drug discovery. That’s who we are. Our mission is to enable and uncover breakthrough science for the discovery of innovative medicine. Do you share our same values and vision? This is a role waiting for you!

You'll work at the cutting edge of data science to solve important challenges in drug discovery by applying their technical and computational abilities for curating, integrating and mining complex biological data from different technologies, species and conditions.

As a member of the 200+ strong data science community at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), you'll also benefit from a global community with extensive know-how and resources in data analysis, data engineering, and machine learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Playing a key role in an interdisciplinary team to link and reveal the interconnection of single cell transcriptomics with genetics and proteomics by applying your expertise in any or all of functional-, structural- and epi-genomics.

- Applying novel approaches to diverse data types (e.g. genetics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics) and to diverse technologies to identify novel therapeutic mechanisms, disease mechanisms, and biomarkers in multiple disease indications.

- Quickly learn how to use computational tools, data sources and analytical methods needed to answer a wide range of critical questions.

- Collaborating with colleagues across departments and domains to improve the impact and the success of the projects.

- Innovate, recommend and develop sophisticated predictive analytics and computational approaches to answer key questions and synthesize data-driven insights for project progression.

- Integrate presentations, visualization tools and contextual storytelling to translate findings back to stakeholders.

- Generate clear impact by distilling the complexity of available data into a biological interpretation, e.g. advancing proposals of novel targets.

Minimum Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:

- PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, biostatistics, or related field; alternatively MSc plus equivalent life sciences industry experience.

- Demonstrated working knowledge and application of statistics and data modeling to large scale life sciences data.

- Hands-on experience in integration of large multi-omics data (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and/or metabolomics).

- Proficiency in R/Python, literate programming notebooks, git, high-performance computing and competency working in a Unix/Linux environment.

- High-learning capacity and curiosity with results-oriented problem-solving skills, demonstrating ability to progress despite logistic and scientific constraints.

- Ability to work independently and in a team.

- Languages: Proficient English, oral and written.

Desirable Skills:

- Demonstrated experience with scRNAseq, human genetics and structural biology.

- Demonstrated experience with data engineering, machine learning, and AI for studying biological problems, ideally for omics data.
