Job Purpose
Lead Genesis Labs, the Novartis incubator and accelerator for ideating and developing cutting edge technology and therapeutic concepts. The leader in this role will advance Genesis Lab’s strategy, from program design through implementation via discrete projects, with an emphasis on designing the program to drive critical elements of the NIBR strategy and on ensuring project teams successfully execute strategic plans and deliver innovative concepts into the pipeline. The leader will also be responsible for design and launch of future submission campaigns.

Genesis Labs is a global cross divisional program that proactively fosters the testing of innovative scientific and technological concepts to advance Novartis’ business, while also advancing the leadership and technical development and engagement of the associates participating in the program. It enables and encourages members of the NVS community to share ideas and build innovative proposals with diverse teams consisting of critical skillsets independent of their organization or location within NVS, as well as reaching to the academic community to augment their submission. Culturally, an overarching aspiration of this program is to catalyze an increased mindset of open, non-judgmental ideation within our Research and Development organizations at all levels, leading to more timely innovation and faster cycle times to deliver cures to patients. A key goal of this program is to re-integrate the successful programs into the Novartis portfolio upon completion of their funding – accelerating efforts in drug discovery and development.

The role requires a unique combination of skill sets – strong scientific background, ability to understand and support a broad array of emerging science and technologies and a passion for embracing the unknown. In addition the person must possess the ability to work with and influence a diversity of the senior leaders across NVS and the agility to guide the program forward, balancing inputs from the line functions and the vision of the Genesis Labs to be a proving ground for alternative approaches for leadership development and novel solutions to our challenges in drug discovery and development. The ideal leader is a role model for guiding unbossed science.

Major Accountabilities
• Lead the design and execution of the next generation of Genesis Labs, to drive key elements of NIBR and Novartis strategy.
• Engage NIBR leadership to garner support and financial commitment for the program as well as support of their teams to participate.
• Oversee all aspects of calls for applications including; ideation events, submission, review & shortlisting process, and on boarding of selected teams. As a key component to maximize existing NIBR assets, this role will also be responsible for working cross-organization to create essential tool inventories to leverage with the program.
• Oversee funded programs, monitor milestones, budget, talent, and reintegration and ensure project teams funded through the program will successfully execute their strategic plans and deliver innovative concepts into the pipeline.
• Engage key stakeholder functions via matrix leadership such as P&O, Communications and Line functions as well as third party providers to create the infrastructure to support submission, review, awarded programs as well as those not funded.
• Foster network connections across NVS at all levels to ensure the key goals of the Genesis Labs are understood and groups have the support required to engage in the program.
• A key component of this role, will be to foster the evolution of an entrepreneurial mind-set within the program. As such you will play a key role in encouraging the use of agile and design thinking methodologies within the teams to help them accelerate their scientific concepts.

Minimum Requirements

Education
• Bachelors Degree required. PhD in Life Sciences preferred.

Work Experience
• Minimum 10+ years Drug Discovery Experience required. Experience within start-up culture desired.
• Passion for embracing the unknown, ability to work and influence diverse senior leaders and stakeholders across Novartis. Strong people leadership skills, including influencing and coaching, and an ability to successfully work in a highly matrixed environment.
• Strong Laboratory skills with an understanding of critical aspects of drug development. Broad knowledge in ideation platforms to share ideas, methods to engage community to participate.
• Strong Change Management skills and ability to lead through ambiguity. Demonstrated agility and impact as a change agent and entrepreneur.
• Experience effectively leading across organizational boundaries. Extensive experience leading large complex teams. Strong global networking and broker skills within NIBR and across NVS.

Languages
• Fluency in English required, both excellent oral and written communications skills. Strong collaborative and communicative skills.

Travel
• Up to 5% travel may be required, subject to business requirements.
