Job Description

500+ million people worldwide suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
We are seeking an innovative scientist to join the Respiratory Diseases group in the exploratory Disease Area X (DAx) department, to develop novel complex phenotypic assays, and ultimately develop transformative therapies for these patients.

DAx is a highly dynamic and collaborative drug discovery department that interfaces innovative biology, genetic engineering, gene and cell therapy, genome analysis, and different modalities, with pre-clinical development and translational medicine.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Independently develop and perform complex phenotypic and target-based assays to drive decision-making activities to bring forward development candidates for ground-breaking therapies in respiratory disease
- Independently design experiments and generate, analyze, and present data to the team and relevant partners
- Collaborate closely with colleagues to assist in the development and implementation of disease relevant assays
- Make connections and propose hypotheses from the multitude of data at your disposal and assess and implement emerging ground breaking technologies and novel assays
- Develop productive relationships with collaborators and represent Novartis values of integrity, courage, innovation, performance, quality, and collaboration

Minimum Requirements

What You'll Bring to the Role:

- BS or MS (or equivalent) in cell biology, biological chemistry, or related discipline and a minimum of 2 years related laboratory experience
- Proven expertise in complex phenotypic assay development, focused screening, and LMW hit validation
- Strong core competencies in cell biology, assay development, and medium throughput compound screening with hands on experience with a wide range of in-vitro cellular assays such as high-content imaging, cell culture, RT-QPCR, western blotting, ELISAs, flow cytometry, and reporter assays is required
- Experience with compound screening formats, laboratory instrumentation and automation, data analysis and management, and a sound knowledge of the drug discovery process
- Demonstrated knowledge concerning procedures for growth, maintenance and safety procedures with diverse mammalian cell types. Knowledge of air-liquid interface (ALI) culture would be beneficial
- Familiarity with compound handling and the identification and implementation of new technologies that will improve the quality of lead compounds

Desirable Skills:

- Experience in respiratory disease research (COPD, IPF, asthma)
