Job Description

1.2 million patients benefited from Novartis Oncology therapeutics in 2020. Oncology Data Science provides computational biology expertise to NIBR Oncology, from target ID through clinical development, for both targeted and immune therapies. We apply cutting-edge technologies and analytical approaches to elucidate the molecular basis for therapeutic response in individual cancer patients. Combining data across several modalities, from cellular imaging to multi-omics and histopathology, we develop and use state-of-art AI approaches to advance cancer research. Using sequencing data generated from thousands of patient samples collected in Novartis oncology clinical trials, we bring hypotheses from biomarker discovery to bear on drug discovery and development.

About the role
We are seeking a senior computational biologist to lead a team of data scientists developing AI methods to advance oncology drug discovery programs. The successful candidate will mentor and develop team members, nurture close collaborations with oncology drug discovery teams, and drive our AI strategy with a focus on portfolio impact.

Major accountabilities and key activities
• Lead a team of ~2 data scientists with potential for future expansion
• Design and perform analyses of high-dimensional biomedical data to test and discover biomarkers for response and resistance to therapy and better characterize cancer models and compounds
• Develop innovative analytical approaches with translational impact for imaging data.
• Develop and maintain strong collaborations with drug discovery teams, other analytic line functions, and clinical teams across the organization
• Contribute to data science strategy within the Oncology
• Data Science team with a focus on AI.

Minimum Requirements

Required core skills and capabilities:
• Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, or related field and 7+ years of relevant experience (or MS +10 years of relevant experience), with expertise in image analysis.
• Track record of applying AI methods and biological interpretation to biomedical data, with a strong focus on imaging, to drive impact on NIBR’s portfolio
• Direct people management experience including a strong focus on building a caring and respectful team environment, creating opportunities for others, and developing team members’ careers
• Demonstrated statistical and analytical ability with programming expertise in Python and R.
• Scientifically driven with proficient reasoning skills in experimental design, data analysis and interpretation, and experience using data to influence strategy
• Expertise in genomics/cancer genetics and cancer signaling pathways preferred
