Director, Due Diligence, Search & Evaluation-NIBR, BDL


Job Description

This senior project management and business development professional, plans, coordinates and executes high quality due diligence reviews in partnership with Business Development and Licensing (BD&L) Search and Evaluation (S&E) Directors across all NIBR therapeutic and functional areas, with emphasis in the areas of Oncology (including radioligand therapeutics [RLT]), Immunoncology (IO), liver, kidney, respiratory, and non-malignant hematological diseases. The primary responsibility of this individual will be to lead cross-functional due diligence teams and has a critical role in documenting, interpreting and coherently summarizing cross-functional team member input of external business opportunities in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and academic arenas. This individual may also lead out-licensing activities across all disease areas working closely with relevant S&E team members by identifying internal team experts, assembling key documentation, closely tracking progress across all programs, and managing program transitions. This individual will work closely with the Novartis Due Diligence Center of Excellence and be a key external face of the company. Additionally, this individual may also contribute to partnering strategies, assessing targets and novel biology of therapeutic relevance to the in-licensing of drug candidates from pre-clinical stages up to clinical proof of concept, including working with scientific and business teams to set up evaluation agreements on assets or technology platforms of potential partnering interest. There may also be opportunities for the candidate to lead S&E activities on select topics depending on the candidate’s qualifications, interests, and due diligence workflow.
•Use scientific acumen and drug discovery and development experience to evaluate the programs and technologies of potential partners, including assessing the various opportunities, challenges and risks. Ensure that cross-functional team review is integrated in a coherent, professional manner and that the evaluations are represented to senior management in an open, fair and balanced manner.
•Partner with BD&L S&E colleagues on the review of in-licensing opportunities and be accountable for managing due diligence logistics, collating of information, reviewing of documents, incorporating assessments into appropriate team and management reviews, and driving assessment of risks & mitigation plans, timelines and program gaps. This individual and the relevant S&E team member is jointly responsible for preparing high-quality materials that will be reviewed by disease and functional area heads, and discussed at deal governance meetings with senior leaders in NIBR.
•Coordinate out-licensing activities by helping identify internal team experts, assemble documentation and manage logistics, and assist with reverse diligence of particular asset.
•Participate in specific project-based proactive search and evaluation and comprehensive landscape analysis based on, and supportive of, disease area or platform strategy, and identify key opportunities aligned with the strategy, execute due-diligence assessments and help frame the business parameters around potential deals for the NIBR Business Development (NIBR BD&L) organization.

Minimum Requirements

•Advanced scientific degree (Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D., D.V.M., etc.) preferred, or equivalent work experience
•10+ years of biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience, preferably leading or managing drug discovery and/or early clinical development programs or participating as line function leads on drug discovery or due diligence teams
•Experience in drug discovery within areas of due diligence emphasis (Oncology, IO, kidney, liver, lung, and non-malignant hematology) a plus
•Experience in formally reviewing external business opportunities in the biopharmaceutical, consulting or venture capital industries a plus
•Experience in organizing and leading teams of senior professionals
•Experience in project/alliance management a plus
•Strong influencing skills and talent for building consensus
•Strong leadership skills with ability to drive teams to decisions
•Exceptional written and oral communications skills
•Strong organizational abilities with keen attention to detail
•Able to thrive in a complex, global, cross-functional and science driven environment
•Capable of managing project and deadlines
