In Oncology Translational Research (OTR), we are committed to performing cutting edge clinical and lab-based research to ensure the success of our innovative therapeutics. Novartis Oncology reached 1.2 million patients in 2020 and the OTR group leads the efforts to understand how best to deploy the next wave of therapies to treat cancer. OTR supports clinical efforts for multiple therapeutic modalities (Low molecular weight and biologics) that target both cell autonomous and systemic (IO) processes to treat a variety of cancer types. We collaborate closely with both early and late-phase clinical teams as well as preclinical discovery groups.

We are seeking a highly-motivated, curious and collaborative scientific leader with demonstrated success guiding clinical research plans to advance therapies through the early phases of clinical development. In this role, you will guide and support an agile and experienced team of cancer cell biologists both designing and performing translational studies using clinical samples, and executing robust preclinical studies aimed at understanding patient selection, drug resistance and combination opportunities. In addition, the candidate will also act as a collaborative leader with counterparts in multiple departments across NIBR and serve as a thought leader within the oncology group.

Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Leading a multi-disciplinary group of scientists responsible for creation and execution of clinical biomarker plans at every stage in drug development.
• Drive biomarker clinical protocol development and serve as a key participant on clinical project teams
• Manage, mentor and lead a diverse and sophisticated team of cancer cell biologists, including individual contributors and group leaders
• Innovate novel preclinical plans, assays and approaches aimed understanding how to best deploy molecules in clinic
• Aid in identifying and validating next wave drug discovery projects based on translational findings
• Contribute to strategic direction setting and organizational leadership as a member of the Oncology Translational Research Team and the Basel Oncology leadership team

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:

• PhD in the life sciences, with 10+ years of post-graduate experience in cancer biology, including relevant industry experience
• In-depth knowledge of cancer cell biology, cell signaling, assay development and drug discovery biology
• Well versed in the fundamentals and challenges of translational oncology
• Demonstrated ability to lead/manage projects in cross-functional teams, with ability to influence, engage and empower high performing teams
• Strategic thinker with strong problem solving skills and talent for developing creative solutions; demonstrated ability to innovate novel cell biology solutions to drug discovery challenges
• Track record of success as a people manager and mentor
• Ability, and affinity to engage productively with diverse stakeholders, within team and across the organization. Demonstrated ability to work within a highly matrixed organization
• Exceptional oral/written communication skills allowing successful interactions with all levels of the organization
