Job Description

100 billion cells in our brain function in concert to regulate our behavior, cognition, and physiological responses. Deficits in the function of our brain result in devastating neurological diseases including neurodegeneration, psychiatric illnesses, and neurodevelopmental disorders with a large unmet medical need. The neuroscience department at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research is seeking a hardworking scientist with expertise in the ability to process and quantify the cellular composition of brains from preclinical models and postmortem tissue. With your expertise we seek to understand the mechanisms of neurological disease with cellular resolution to identify both novel drug targets and their site of action. Apply to join our innovative multi-disciplinary team encompassing human brain-relevant cellular models, genome engineering, genomics, and computational biology. We will provide the qualified applicant ample opportunities to impact drug discovery, publish or patent results, and grow your career as a scientist focusing on early target discovery and technology development.
Your key responsibilities:
• Perform live and fixed brain dissociation techniques for single cell or nuclei for RNA-seq
• Quantify the composition of brain cells or human induced pluripotent stem cell differentiations and/or sort neurons, astrocytes, and microglia using flow cytometry plus cell labeling methods
• Isolate specific cell populations from brain samples
• Generate organoid (hiPSCs) or brain (mouse, non-human primates, postmortem) cryosections
• Prepare brain tissue for spatial transcriptomics
• Analyze, interpret, and communicate scientific data
• Thorough documentation of experiments using electronic lab notebook (ELN)

Minimum Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
• B.S. or M.S. degree or equivalent in neuroscience, cell biology, immunology, or a similar discipline with at least 2 years of industry or academic research experience
• 2+ years of experience dissociating animal and human tissue for single cell analysis
• Proven ability to employ both cell labeling and statistical approaches to quantify cell or nuclei prep composition with flow cytometry
• Experience generating cryosections from animal, human or organoids
• Experience collaborating to perform successful scRNA-seq or spatial transcriptomics studies
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment that requires a high level of communication, collaboration, and organization
• A passion to improve outcomes for patients with diseases of the nervous system
Desirable requirements:
• Experience handling non-human primate brain samples, human clinical samples, or post-mortem brain
• Experience quantifying the biodistribution of gene therapies
