170 associates comprise NIBR Emeryville, California and includes Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD), an independent research institute within NIBR that applies drug discovery expertise to combat tropical diseases. In addition, a protein interactomics drug discovery center has been formed at this site and includes medicinal chemistry, computer-assisted drug discovery, structural and biophysical chemistry, protein sciences, compound management, and analytical chemistry. Located in the heart of a key academic and biotechnology center, NIBR Emeryville collaborates with local institutions such as Stanford and the University of California campuses in Berkeley and San Francisco.

We seek a self-motivated Ph.D.-level scientist with extensive experience in Biomolecular Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Bio-NMR) spectroscopy to join our team in the Structural & Biophysical Chemistry group (SBC). SBC, part of the Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) department at NIBR, is a multidisciplinary team with expertise in NMR, X-ray crystallography, and biophysics. SBC has a proven track record of bringing new medicines to patients, and collaborates with scientists at the frontiers of chemical biology, chemical genomics, data sciences and disease biology to identify opportunities for next generation therapeutics. We investigate new drug targets and identify and validate small molecule compounds from biochemical, biophysical and cellular screens. Our goal is to find and develop small molecules with the potential for modulating diseases, and we support drug discovery projects in various therapeutic areas like oncology, immuno-oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, immunology and neurological diseases.

The Principal scientist will be an integral member of structure-based drug discovery teams, provide Bio-NMR expertise to advance early drug discovery efforts, design and conduct sophisticated NMR experiments to solve key scientific questions, communicate effectively and efficiently in team meetings and in review sessions, and collaboratively work with other scientists to develop innovative medicines. This role will impact our local discovery efforts and the global discovery portfolio through bench-level contributions. The successful candidate will be expected to implement novel pulse sequences on our Bruker instruments, explore applications of protein dynamics in drug discovery, and conduct protein-observed as well as ligand-observed NMR binding assays for fragment-based screening (FBS) and compound validation.

Your responsibilities:
• Prepare Bio-NMR samples as well as record and analyze spectra of proteins, peptides, nucleic acids and small molecules
• Perform NMR-based FBS and hit validation experiments using suitable binding assays
• Interpret data and present results to internal project teams and global stakeholders to help drive our drug discovery projects
• Independently support multiple drug discovery projects in parallel
• Working closely with the scientists in Protein Sciences to creatively design and generate isotopically labeled reagents for Bio-NMR assay
• Provide strategic input to project teams
• Perform other biochemical and/or biophysical assays, including DSF, ITC, and SPR, on an as needed basis
• Participate in maintaining an in-house Bio-NMR laboratory consisting of high-field spectrometers with associated computing and robotics
• Work with in-house structural biology and drug discovery databases
• Share lab and office tasks, such as ordering reagents, organizing inventories and keeping experimental records, with other team members
• Contribute intellectually to structure-based drug discovery projects and collaborate with partners from other disciplines like disease biology, biochemistry, chemistry, bioinformatics, and IT

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:
• Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry or a related field, plus >3-year postdoctoral experience in academia or industry with significant work experience in Biomolecular NMR spectroscopy
• Extensive hands-on experience in Bio-NMR sample preparation, data acquisition, and analysis
• Deep knowledge of protein dynamics and NMR relaxation experiments as evidenced by authorships on high-profile publications
• Capable of implementing and calibrating new NMR pulse sequences
• Experience in ligand- and protein-observed NMR binding assays
• Proficient in relevant structural biology / NMR software, e.g. Pymol, Topspin, SPARKY, and Schrödinger Suite of software
• Strong biology background, with the ability to use NMR/structural/biophysical data to understand the function of bio-macromolecules
• Must have very strong organizational, planning and communication skills
• Successfully demonstrated initiative, teamwork, collaboration and can-do attitude
• Flexibility to accommodate to rapidly changing priorities and deadlines, with strong interpersonal, written & oral communication and problem-solving skills

Desired Skills:
• Familiarity with the function and experience with troubleshooting of NMR instrumentation and hardware is highly desired
• NMR-based fragment screening experience is highly desired
• Basic or advanced programming language skills, e.g. Python or R, is a plus
• Experience with membrane or intrinsically disordered proteins, solid state NMR, and computational modeling/simulations is also a plus
