Job Description

170 associates comprise NIBR Emeryville, California and includes Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD), an independent research institute within NIBR that applies drug discovery expertise to combat tropical diseases. In addition, a protein interactomics drug discovery center has been formed at this site and includes medicinal chemistry, computer-assisted drug discovery, structural and biophysical chemistry, protein sciences, compound management, and analytical chemistry. Located in the heart of a key academic and biotechnology center, NIBR Emeryville collaborates with local institutions such as Stanford and the University of California campuses in Berkeley and San Francisco.

We seek a self-motivated BS/MS-level lab-based research scientist with experience in protein biochemistry and/or biophysics to join our Structural & Biophysical Chemistry group (SBC). SBC, part of the Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) department at NIBR, is a multidisciplinary team with expertise in Biomolecular Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Bio-NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and biophysics. SBC has a proven track record of bringing new medicines to patients, and collaborates with scientists at the frontiers of chemical biology, chemical genomics, data sciences and disease biology to identify opportunities for next generation therapeutics. We investigate new drug targets and identify and validate small molecule compounds from biochemical, biophysical and cellular screens. Our goal is to find and develop small molecules with the potential for modulating diseases, and we support drug discovery projects in various therapeutic areas like oncology, immuno-oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, immunology and neurological diseases.

The research scientist will be an integral member of structure-based drug discovery teams, prepare assay samples to generate critical data, collaboratively work with other scientists to develop innovative medicines, and perform daily laboratory maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will get on-the-job training in protein NMR data collection and interpretation and other biophysical techniques.

Your responsibilities:
• Prepare NMR samples with bio-macromolecules and small molecules in an efficient, accurate, and reliable manner
• Handle and test protein and nucleic acid reagents, such as measuring concentration, concentrating, diluting, dialyzing, freezing and thawing.
• Perform various biochemical and/or biophysical assays, including DSF, ITC, and SPR
• Record and analyze standard Bio-NMR experiments (depending on level of experience on-the-job training will be provided)
• Maintain the biochemistry laboratory consisting of liquid handling robots, centrifuges, freezers, etc.
• Perform lab and office tasks, such as ordering reagents, organizing inventories and keeping experimental records
• Coordinate workflows and logistics to meet project goals
• Work with in-house structural biology and drug discovery databases
• Present scientific discoveries at lab, project or unit meetings, as well as for other internal parties as needed
• Contribute intellectually to structure-based drug discovery projects and collaborate with partners from other disciplines like disease biology, biochemistry, chemistry, bioinformatics, and IT

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:
• A B.S. or an advanced degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Molecular Biology, or related discipline
• Substantial (1+ years) and recent work experience in biotech or academic labs with demonstrated success in protein-related research
• Must have very strong organizational, planning and communication skills and must acquire new laboratory skills quickly
• Extensive hands-on experience in at least one of the following techniques: protein expression/purification, NMR, SPR, BLI, MS, ITC, DSF, AUC, MST, CD, LC, plate-based biochemical assays
• Successfully demonstrated initiative, teamwork, collaboration and can-do attitude

Flexibility to accommodate to rapidly changing priorities and deadlines, with strong interpersonal, written & oral communication, and problem-solving skills

Desired Skills:
• Biomolecular or Analytical NMR spectroscopy using proteins, nucleic acids or small molecules is desired, but not required, and necessary additional training will be provided
• Experience in relevant structural biology / biophysics software, e.g. Pymol, Topspin or Prism is desired
• Knowledge of fragment-based drug discovery approaches is a plus, as is prior pharmaceutical industry experience
• Basic or advanced programming language skills, e.g. Python or R, is a plus
