Pathologist / Associate Director, Preclinical Safety (80-100%)

Sep 21, 2021

Job Description

5600 scientists working on 340 discovery programs in 8 disease areas focusing on 90 new molecular entities makes Novartis a premier place to develop your career as a pathologist. If you are curious, scientifically minded, and want to positively impact society by speeding delivery of novel therapies, then Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research is the place to be.

We seek an enthusiastic and innovative toxicologic pathologist with skills and/or strong interest in computational pathology to join an innovative team that is shaping the future of pathology in drug discovery and development. We are a multidisciplinary team pioneering machine learning approaches for whole slide image (WSI) analysis. Join us to create and implement novel methods to integrate WSI data with other critical nonclinical data sources that may include in vivo (clinical observations, body and organ weights, clinical pathology and biomarker results and omics) and in vitro toxicology data (off target screening), publications, and/or other sources to maximize the information gained from critical nonclinical studies in support of drug discovery and translational medicine.

What you’ll be doing
• Effectively assess for pharmacological and toxicological effects of small molecules and biologics in preclinical studies, with a focus on anatomic pathology and pathology peer review.
• Collaborate with global team of pathologists and other scientists in design of preclinical safety studies and interpretation and communication of study findings, including the impact of the data on the safety profile and clinical development.
• Provide oversight and/or pathology peer review of protocols, data, and reports generated at contract laboratories and maintain effective relationships with CRO pathologists, scientists, and technical staff to ensure high quality, on-time reporting.
• Drive scientific and technical support for identification, development, qualification, and validation of translational biomarkers and pathology endpoints through collaboration with internal and external expert working groups.
• Serve as Project Pathologist on assigned compounds, targets, and therapeutic areas.
• Opportunity to participate as safety assessment expert on global drug development project teams
• Provide a “pathologist’s perspective” in our multidisciplinary research teams as we explore novel machine learning methods, extract reliable insight from whole slide images, and identify correlations with multiple related data to better understand novel modalities, mechanisms of toxicity and clinical translatability.
• Be curious and inspired about concepts of programming languages (e.g. Python), the mathematical foundations of machine learning (including deep learning frameworks), signal processing and image processing to be able to interface with computational pathology engineers regarding analyses, data visualization and integration, computational infrastructure and/or HPC/Cloud workflows.
• Collaborate and innovate across traditional line functions focusing on digital pathology, secondary pharmacology and multi-modal data integration.
• Accelerate the application of computational pathology data annotation, analysis and building decision support algorithms in our safety assessment team.
• Share knowledge with colleagues and train them on ML and computational approaches including model understanding/interpretability.
• Engage with a broad array of internal and external partners including the broader data science community within Translational Medicine, data science partners in diverse functions across Novartis, and external partners.

80-100% work time model available. Some restrictions on flexible working options may apply and will be discussed during interview if applicable.

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent, and Board Certified Anatomic Pathologist ECVP or ACVP
• Preferred: additional PhD in a biological science
• Experience in toxicological pathology. Preferred: experience in biologics, gene and cell therapy and emerging/novel modalities application in safety assessment, preferably within pharmaceutical/biotech or contract research organization
• Good understanding of the drug development process, preferably including experience working directly on drug development project teams and Regulatory interactions and submissions
• Experience in toxicologic pathology and image analysis.
• Experience with GLP regulations and peer review
• Experience with digital pathology systems
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn programming languages such as Python or R; commonly used deep learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow, Pytorch) and/or model architectures; data visualization approaches, etc.
• Strong organizational skills to contribute to complex machine learning projects/initiatives.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work cross-functionally within a team and matrix environment with the curiosity and Inspiration to build excellent team spirit.
