500+ million people worldwide suffer from chronic respiratory disease. The Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research seeks a highly skilled and innovative scientist to join the in vitro immunology team in the Respiratory Therapeutic Area of the Disease Area X Department to develop and execute novel in vitro assays to drive target discovery and validation. In this role, your work will help to bring ground-breaking therapies to our patients.

You will work in an interdisciplinary group to build exploratory research efforts into effective drug discovery projects. In this lab-based position, you will bring your proven assay development and critical-thinking skills to perform mechanism of action and target validation studies to drive decision-making activities and facilitate the development of innovative therapies for respiratory disease.

Key responsibilities:

- Perform molecular, in vitro and ex vivo techniques to support efforts to understand respiratory disease mechanisms and compound mechanisms of action.

- Routinely isolate and culture cells (also in co-culture) from human donor blood samples and perform downstream functional assays using the cells.

- Deliver high quality in vitro data to support progression of the respiratory drug discovery portfolio.

- Data analysis and interpretation to better understand respiratory disease mechanisms and compound mechanism of action.

- Presentation of data and results to group and project teams

- Work in compliance with the Novartis Code of Conduct and in accordance with Novartis guidelines regarding health and safety and data recording

Minimum Requirements

What You'll Bring to the Role:

- BS or MS (or equivalent) in Life Sciences and a minimum of 3-5 years related laboratory experience in an academic or industrial drug discovery setting.

- Proven expertise with the aseptic culture of mammalian cells (cell lines and primary cells), including propagating cultures and freezing cells. Significant experience with culturing human primary immune cells is required. Experience with long-term cultures is preferred.

- Proven success developing in vitro assays and familiarity with basic lab techniques including flow cytometry, western blotting, ELISA/MSD, high content imaging, microscopy, RNA isolation and qPCR

- Strong verbal and written communication skills

- Experience working within a cross-functional team and serving as a point-of contact for the team

- Ability to independently design and analyze experiments and work autonomously in a fast-paced environment.

- Proficiency in computer use, especially Microsoft Office programs

- Qualified candidates will have a commitment to scientific rigor, strong time management and organizations skills, and an ability to troubleshoot and solve problems

Desirable Skills:

- Demonstrable in vitro pharmacology skills

- Respiratory disease and immune cell knowledge
