Job Description

60 million! That is how many people are affected globally by glaucoma. This progressive disease can lead to damage of the optic nerve and eventually lead to blindness. At the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), we are developing new therapies to help control disease progression by lowering intraocular pressure and providing neuroprotection in the hope of finding a cure for this silent thief of sight.

We are looking for a Principal Scientist to join our Ophthalmology Department to support the discovery and development of innovative treatments for glaucoma and other ocular diseases. In this role, you will serve as an in vivo pharmacology expert responsible for conceptualizing, generating and characterizing in vivo models of disease. This includes effectively leading a team of scientists, and potentially a project team, in an innovation-based role across a matrixed organization.

What you will be doing:

•Perform experiments, analyze data, generate written and oral reports, and stay current with the literature and technological advances
•Effectively lead a team of scientists through both scientific and career growth mentoring
•Utilize novel and established in vivo models to test compounds using pharmacodynamic readouts
•Demonstrate proficiency in surgical techniques, tissue staining, and microscopy
•Collaboratively generate hypotheses with cross-functional teams and validate targets
•Identify new relevant techniques and platforms with a strategic focus impacting drug discovery in Ophthalmology research
