Your key responsibilities:

The Senior Principal Scientist of Alzheimer’s disease will lead drug discovery programs in Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative diseases and contribute to Alzheimer’s disease therapeutic strategy, reporting to the Head of Neurodegeneration. Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Develop and lead drug discovery programs focused on Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders using the multiple modalities available to Novartis and ranging in stage from exploratory to clinical proof-of-concept (PoC)

- Collaborate with the Head of Neurodegeneration, internal and external experts and the Neuroscience Leadership Team (NSLT) to refine and execute on Novartis’ Alzheimer’s disease strategy

- Identify and pursue innovative targets for Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders based on high-quality human and experimental data

- Communicate & collaborate across the organization to advance Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegeneration strategy & portfolio priorities

- For each program, define key experiments critical for target validation, and in vitro and in vivo pharmacology, in order to establish a strong case for PoC

- Manage and mentor research scientists, focusing on Novartis’ values and culture to most effectively deliver on NS objectives and develop NS talent.

- Share deep expertise in Alzheimer’s disease etiology and pathophysiology during drug discovery, drug development, and business development decision making

Minimum Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:

- PhD in neuroscience, biology, pharmacology or a related subject area and at least 5 years of proven experience in Alzheimer’s disease research in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.

- Deep understanding of relevant disease biology.

- Strong record of leading teams, presenting to decision boards and demonstrated ability to influence at the Leadership Team level

- Ability to drive to data-based decisions involving internal and external partners so as to deliver on organizational goals

- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and present complex and/or new ideas with clarity and simplicity

- “portfolio mentality” to advance the highest potential programs regardless of origin

Desirable Skills:

- Experience in more than one therapeutic modality including low molecular weight molecules, antibodies, oligonucleotides, gene therapy

- Experience evaluating novel delivery mechanisms for crossing the blood brain barrier
