The Exploratory Disease Area (DAx) at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) in Basel, Switzerland, is seeking a Scientific Associate with excellent Molecular and Cell Biology skills to join a lab focusing on cellular plasticity in kidney using advanced in vitro models. The specific focus of the team is on the discovery and development of new therapeutics for people with inherited kidney diseases.

As part of a multidisciplinary, highly collaborative team, you will independently plan, execute and analyse experiments and interpret data aiming at the discovery of new therapeutic targets and drug leads. The group is using complex primary cell culture models, including human stem cell-derived 3D organoid systems to perform studies under relevant physiological conditions. You will contribute to writing of research documents and publications. Furthermore, you will interact with multiple groups within our department as well as with other groups and external colleagues and have the opportunity to represent the lab in project team and department meetings.

Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
• Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cell Biology or another relevant discipline
• Several years of post-graduate experience in industry or academia in drug discovery or related laboratory research is preferred (Candidates with proven higher expertise may be considered for Research Scientist II level)
• Proficiency in Molecular and Cell Biology techniques, comprising but not restricted to cultivation and manipulation of pluripotent stem cells and primary human cell cultures, genetic manipulation (e.g. CRISPR, viral transduction), gene expression analyses, biochemical assays and molecular cloning
• Proven experience with complex cellular models, image-based analysis, confocal microscopy and flow cytometry is advantageous
• Expertise in drug discovery and development is considered beneficial
• Highly motivated team player with outstanding collaboration skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Working proficiency in English (oral/written)

This position isn’t suitable for those with a PhD: more relevant positions to search for have job titles including ‘Principal Scientist’.

Based on binding Swiss work permit regulations, this position can only be offered to an applicant that already has an EU/EFTA or Swiss Passport, or a non-EU/EFTA national that already has an unrestricted Swiss Residence & Work Permit or family reunification ”B permit”.
